When/how to start pumpng
How and when do you start pumping? I'm afraid if I pump then DD will want to eat and I will be empty. I don't want to give her bottles yet, I just want to start building a reserve. So how did you start pumping to get a reserve going? Thanks!

When/how to start pumpng
I pumped very early on, within a week. I wanted dh to be involved and be able to give a feeding. I would pump after nursing.

I had to pump immediately. DS had latch issues and I had supply issues, I did the 3 tiered method, PER MY LACTATION CONSULTANT. You have the baby eat at the breast, then you give the bottle and you pump. I have been pumping since the day after he was born, and I never looked back. Now, at 6 months, I pump in the morning (if I wake up) before he even eats, then I pump 2-3 times at work (4 if I am lucky) and I pump 1-2 times at home at night.

It really depends. If you're able to breastfeed directly, they usually don't recommend pumping right away to avoid oversupply.
I tried nursing in the hospital on the first day and DD just wouldn't latch at all so a nurse brought me a manual pump. I then moved onto my electric one when I got home 2 days later while still trying to get DD to latch. And then I just kept going til DD was 10 months old. I had low supply the whole time.
This time around, I will probably try nursing again and if DD2 won't latch, I'll have DH bring my electric pump to the hospital.

With my first I didn't pump for the first few weeks. I started maybe around a month in. Dd wasn't great at nursing at first so just getting her to wake up and feed was enough work I didn't have time or desire to pump for awhile.
My second want allowed milk the first few days bc she had some issues so I pumped and hand expressed from day one. I continued pumping for the first few weeks even after she was nursing well. I stopped pumping eventually and rarely touch it anymore but I have a good stash saved up that she refuses to drink anyway.

If you're taking at least 12 weeks off of work, I wouldn't start until at least six weeks. It's best to get breast-feeding established first.

I started pumping in the am (right before or after he nursed) when he was 9 or 10 weeks old. I actually froze a lot and never used it. I donated that milk to a woman who had supply issues. At work in the beginning, I'd pump on Saturdays and Sunday's to insure I had enough fresh BM for DS. Once he started on solids, his milk intake dropped and then I was able to freeze more. Needless to say, now at almost 13 months, I gave him Frozen BM for the first time today (since I've cut back on pumping).
So, I'd say don't stress about pumping right now.

The hospital had me pump 20 minutes after every feeding right from the start which created a huge oversupply (with clogs and mastitis) and a very tired mama. If you want your hubby to be involved, only pump for that missed feeding. I definitely wouldn't pump any extra as it's really not idea to have an oversupply. I didn't give a bottle until about a month in because I was afraid of nipple confusion but this time I might start earlier on since we had trouble getting my son to take a bottle after not doing it enough by the time I went back to work! I won't be pumping to create extra though---just when I need to pump so someone can give a bottle.

So does that mean that you have the baby do breast feeding and bottle feeding all in one sitting? (Sorry my post kept deleting for some reason and tried ask when I wrote interesting.)

I started since I was at the hospital because my son didn't really latched, but now that I'm looking back, I really think it was because I didn't really know what I was doing and didn't have the right support for BFing. This time around, I'm trying to prepare myself better with more info, and going to La Leche meetings, I really don't wanna start pumping til my milk comes and I have a steady production. It's gonna probably be hard and frustrating but I'm feeling confident I can do it.

I started pumping in the hospital. DD was in the NICU so I used the hospital Medela Pump(100x better than mine) so I could pump in the middle of the night.
No issues with nipple confusion but my supply dried out around 3 months.
Hopefully my lil bean doesn't need the NICU so I can nurse right away.

Same here. The hospital started me right away on their pump so DS could get at least anything, and he was getting formula in the NICU.
Kept pumping once I got home a week later but I never had a good supply so pumping didn't affect me.

A lactation consultant that came to my house when DS was 1 month also gave me that advice. I had a low supply. I was never able to increase but that's what I tried for awhile. It was very tiring. It could work through.

Yup, you let the baby try to BF for a few minutes, not long (since he was so early, I had almost NO production at first), then you give the baby the bottle and you pump. Usually that meant DH giving the bottle and me pumping. It was about 1-1&1/2 week later that he was able to get enough out of me to really eat. I did use the breast shield until about 5 weeksish.
