Hello,
My DH and I have decided that our home is just not going to work for us long term. So we have slowly started looking at the market in the smithtown and Nesconset area. We have no clue about the different neighborhoods. Can you share any insight on the area for us? We plan on driving out a few times this summer to get a feel for the area.
Thank you!!!

Smithtown/Nesconset

It's a large area. I don't think there are any bad parts. Some parts of smithtown have higher taxes than others, and if you want to stay in smithtown schools just note that some of nesconset is zoned for sachem. (not saying there is anything wrong with sachem, just that nesconset can be smithtown or sachem schools).

Re: Smithtown/Nesconset

we are in Smithtonw but on the commack side. Have lived here for 8 years and love it. Not sure where you guys live now, but smithtown has a ton of beaches, parks both local, state, county etc. Libraries have all recently been remodeled and have nice programs for the kids. Close to pretty much everything IMO.

Taxes can be on the high end, we are around $11K for about half an acre. Schools are very good, my son is in elementary and we have been very happy his first few years with teachers and the admin.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions. I know there are quite a few of us in the Smithtown area on here!

I grew up in nesconset. Went to smithtown. Was there for 29 years. Love it! I've been out of there for almost 4 years and when I go back to visit my parents I wish we could afford it! There really aren't any bad areas. St james is right next to nesconset and a little cheaper than living in smithtown, but still smithtown schools. Plus it's right next to the beaches. Loved having "short" beach growing up! there are two high schools now. If you buy in nesconset you'll be in smithtown east which is in st james. If you buy in smithtown area you'll be at smithtown west which is by the "bull". If you have any specific questions let me know!

We are in the Town of Smithtown with a Commack mailing address and Commack schools. As pp stated, there are a lot of parks and local programs etc. Many people who grew up in the area stay (or return) to raise their families here too. You can't go wrong pretty much anywhere in the area

Re: Smithtown/Nesconset

Recently moved from Nassau County to Nesconset and couldn't be happier. Been here about 2 1/2 years now. We live in a great neighborhood and have a terrific elementary school. Our taxes are high, but we gained a much bigger house on a much bigger property.

Still learning our way around. Love the proximity to the mall and every store imaginable. Traffic is a pain sometimes, but that's Long Island for you.

Good luck to you!

Re: Smithtown/Nesconset

Grew up in Nesconset. Parents are still there.

I'm in Smithtown - two minutes up the road from them though.

Nesconset, Smithtown, Village of the Branch, Saint James, Head of the Harbor, and Nissequogue - for the most part, all of these areas go to Smithtown SD. You may find a few here or there on the border of Nesconset and Lake Grove/Lake Ronkonkoma that have a Nesconset address but are Sachem SD. So watch for that. You also may find a few Smithtown address that are either Hauppauge SD or Commack SD depending on if they are on the other side -- the border on that side. But, for the most part, the above city addresses will put you in the TOWN of Smithtown with Smithtown SD.

I have lived in Nesconset, Saint James, and Smithtown itself -- all Smithtown schools, but different zips. All within maybe 5-8 minutes of each other. I love each area for different reasons.

Nesconset I love because they have a lot of "Story Book Homes" - a certain builder that built these adorable capes, farm ranches, etc. style homes. The homes are quality, the layout is great. You'll find a lot of these over in the "Robin Hood Section" where the streets are named after that -- like, Nottingham, Prince Charming, Robin Hood, Locksley, etc. Adorable homes.

Saint James has the cutest little town to walk through. When I lived there I could walk to the stores from my home - loved it!!! The people are so friendly. It is like a little place from back in time - all mom and pop shops owned by real people who know your name. It was wonderful. Loved it there. A lot of little homes - all different styles, each with character. You'll find bungalows and ranches, capes and such. Adorable.

Smithtown - all different areas, great schools, there are million dollar +++ homes up in Head of the Harbor and Nissequogue. There are great condo communities -- I live in one myself now, love it. It is easy to get to the Northern or the LIE. The SD rates really well. I went there, I loved it. Great sense of community. The parks and beaches and access to such cannot be beat. We have a great highway department - snow and garbage removal is top notch.

Hope that helps!

Smithtown/Nesconset

I live in Smithtown and grew up here. I agree with what a previous poster said about everything being so close and convenient. Love that there are a bunch of playgrounds to take my daughter to. I also love that there are a lot of great restaurants in the area.
I think you really can't go wrong with any part of Smithtown. The traffic can be really annoying and I feel like it's just getting worse!

Thanks for all the input on the area! We drove out yesterday and saw some houses! I forgot how hard house hunting is! We were really more interested in getting a feel for the area. We plan on going out a few more times to explore more. It is definitely very different from where we live now! I grew up upstate and I forgot about wildlife and roads! Got a great reminder of that!Chat Icon I am sure I will have more questions as our hunt unfolds!!

Thank you again!!!
