Absolutely not, they are just barely starting to eat human food at that age, they don't need any junk

I agree with this.

Re: Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

It's a personal choice. At 8 months DD was eating tiny spoonfuls of chocolate ice cream, mousse, and chocolate shavings. At first I was pretty against the idea but DH wanted her exposed to it and my in-laws who were around DD very often at that age had their own agenda. So, I knew it was a losing battle for me.
Since i couldn't beat them, I opted to make these items fresh with healthier ingredients. At least everyone respected my wishes to only give her what I made. She LOVED it.

Re: Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

I must be really really laid back.

I wouldn't think twice about an 8 month old having a tiny bite of a chocolate bunny. But I've also given all of my boys tastes of ice cream, cake, cookies etc at 6 months of age. Not bowls of junk, just little bites here and there. They always eat healthy and I know they're getting all they need so bites here and there don't bother me.

I do think that others shouldn't tease you or push their agenda on you...it's RUDE. You're the parent, not them!

Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

I've said no to my 3 yr old getting a treat sometimes, so I completely agree with you!

IMO, the food in question is a moot point. It doesn't matter if it's chocolate, whole grain oat cereal, or apple sauce. If Mom says no, the answer is no. That's end, end of conversation.

This.

But the item *IS* a point because it seems THEY are trying to say she's a meanie for not allowing sweets.

I hate people making me the bad guy. I said no, that's it.

Stick with it. Your kid will be better for it. AJ is 6 and she'll say 'can I have a kiss' and you KNOW she means the chocolate and I just say "no" and she moves on. No one, kid or adult "NEEDS" chocolate or candy to survive. Its a treat. Even on treat holidays like valentine's day, Halloween and even easter.. the rules don't change. You can have one.. maybe, if I remember and if you remember to ask and if you've been freaking STELLAR. Generally a month post whatever candy commercial holiday has passed we trash TONS of candy.

On a side note: from time to time I say yes to the kiss and it surprises her.. But just last night she was super hyped to finish all her dinner and all her veggies so she could have a small cup of tea. She danced in the living room for it LOL

I'm crazy

what anyone else would have done is totally irrelevant - it's 150% RUDE to force anything like that on a parent.
Even if your child was 8 YEARS old and you didn't want them to eat something - YOU are the parent.
To badger you about it for 15 minutes is unacceptable.

This.

And I'm pretty sure my ped told me no chocolate before a year? Or I'm thinking of something else bc my kids have eaten my brain Chat Icon

That's a bit too young.
And I am VERY laxed.
My concern is that at that age, DD had no teeth at all. I'd be worried she might choke.

If someone wanted to give her a spoonful of chocolate ice cream or even a taste of a soft cake at that age I'd be ok with it.

But not hard, chocolate candy

This exactly. My dd had a taste of ice cream at 5 months. I think hard candy like that is too much at 8 months.

Re: Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

I would've given it to MY kids because they all had a mouth full of teeth and were eating solid foods at 8 months.

If I were you and my child still gagged on soft foods- no, I would not.

I may let him/her taste a teeny tiny spec- but I wouldn't give them a "piece."

Bottom line- your kid, your rules.

No for me. But this is coming from someone who used to break puffs in half fearing my kids would chokeChat Icon

Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

I wouldn't have given my daughter chocolate at 8 months either. I always thought it would make her even more hyper than she is already! But in any case, I would have been so annoyed if my in-laws did that to me.

Bottom line is if you said no then it's NO. Your kid, your rules. It's not like he needed to have it. They should just shut up and let you be the parent. They had their turn. People annoy me!

Re: Giving 8 month old a piece of chocolate

Your the parent you make the rules.

Me personally, If my child didn't have any allergies and someone gave him a little piece of a chocolate bunny I wouldn't care. But If I told them not to, I would hope they respect my decision and not give it to them.
