Ok, can you reassure me about Clomid?

After reading some of your responses to my last thread, I agree that going from unmedicated IUIs to IVF is indeed a huge step.

The reasons I had hesitated about Clomid previously is because DH and I are very concerned about twins. I had an irritable uterus and preterm contractions last time around, and twins can increase this risk.

I've also heard some things about Clomid and an increased risk of cancer for the mother, or birth defects for the baby. I asked the doctor about that and he said that the cancer risk is only for people who are on Clomid for 12 months straight or something.

From what I've read online, it seems like maybe the birth defect risk with Clomid goes up when people try to use it unmonitored - people get it online and use it on their own. If it stays in the system too long after conception it can be harmful.

Does Clomid give you a better quality egg? I'm really considering using it next month, but I'm a huge worrier. I'd love any reassurance you ladies could give! Tell me your warm fuzzy Clomid stories Chat Icon

Maybe I should add that I already ovulate on my own, and my AMH has been measured at both 0.9 and 2.0. So I'm not sure which one it really is. My antral follicle count was 12.

Re: Ok, can you reassure me about Clomid?

I had one unmedicated cycle which resulted in a miscarriage and was moved right on to chlomid the next cycle last year. I currently just finished my 3rd round of chlomid and am in my 2WW. for my 5th IUI. Chlomid cannot improve the quality of yours eggs. I am not sure anything can. However it increases the quantity of eggs. On previous cycles I have produced anywhere between 3-5 good sized follicles. My first round was successful with a singleton but unfortunately I miscarried for a 2nd time. This time I had 5 good sized follies. I was apprised that there is a chance (not a huge chance, but a chance none-the-less) of having multiples. Generally I don't think doctors want you to have more than 6 cycles on it. But I was assured the risk of defects and cancer are very low. You are monitored very closely.
To answer your other question it makes me feel weird and irritable. I take it at night at dinner time to try to avoid side effects. I feel a little weird in the morning. Kind of like the fuzzy feeling when you have a hangover. I was definitely more emotional and had little things annoy me.My ovaries hurt a little before trigger but not bad. Overall, for me, the benefits out weigh the side effects. I have responded well. Everyone is different. Hopefully you respond well! Good luck!!!!

i would skip clomid and do femara instead. less uterine side effects and similar effective rates.

I took clomid and did an IUI and got pregnant with my daughter. Did the same a few years later and got pregnant with my son. I agree with the pp that is helps with the quantity. I took it at night after dinner also and didn't experience any side effects. To address you concern about twins- both my parents are twins, my aunts are twins, I have great uncles who are twins and my great grandmother was a triplet. Both my kids are singletons and both were conceived with the help of clomid. Good luck to you Chat Icon

I used clomid for six cycles. None worked. They say after 6, you shouldn't use it anymore. It thins your lining.
I never did an unmediated cycle, but on 100 mg, I only got one follicle.
On injectables - I got 8 follies per cycle (which worked n resulted in a singleton)

I O on my own. Tried clomid and it just wasn't for me.

Clomid month 1, had 1 follie. IUI. BFN.
Clomid month 2, had 1 follie. Got a bad migraine so I decided clomid wasn't for me. IUI. BFN.
Injectables cycle, had 3 follies. IUI. BFP resulting in Chat Icon!

Second time around.

When trying for #1:

1) 50 mg Clomid + timed intercourse = BFN
2) 50 mg Clomid + timed intercourse = BFN
3) 100 mg Clomid + IUI (two follies) = one bouncing baby boy Chat Icon

When trying for #2:

1) 100 mg Clomid + IUI (one follie) = BFN
2) 150 mg Clomid + IUI (one follie) = BFN
3) 200 mg Clomid + IUI (two follies) = BFN

Also, on my 2nd IVF round, we tried 150 mg of Clomid, in addition to the injectables. Two follies, one egg retrieved, didn't fertilize.

My ovaries are assholes.

That's really interesting that it seems for some people it didn't induce multiple follicles.

Are most of you ladies unexplained infertility? I guess I should really give clomid a shot at least once before moving on - the cost difference between that and IVF is just too great to ignore.

I have DOR, which explains the limited response. My OB that initially prescribed it said that the multiples risk was something like 16%, if I'm remembering correctly.

For me I responded very well to clomid that I had to be on half a pill. I guess it depends on the person. I did have to have the HCG shot to trigger ovulation though.

you can always try clomid or femara and if you produce too many follies, skip that cycle.

Is Clomid ok to take if you have DOR? I'm not sure exactly how my Ovarian Reserve is, as when I had it tested back in Nov, it was 2.1. Then a month later it was 0.9. I've been told my antral follicle count is 12. So I'm not really sure what my status is.

I have DOR as well. At the time IUI's were all that were covered by my insurance. I used clomid for 3 cycles, needless to say it never worked.

I ovulate on my own as well. AMH was over 3, DH's SA was fine. We are unexplained. So our RE suggested that we try clomid to increase the number of targets.

I took clomid for 4 cycles so far. Two cycles resulted in 2 follicles, the other 2 cycles resulted in 3 follicles. Even when I produced 3 follicles, my RE said my odds of having triplets were just about 0% and my odds of having twins were less than 5%.

As far as the cancer side effects, I read that your risk goes up if you've taken clomid for 12 cycles.

If that's what your doctor recommends, then it's fine to take Clomid with DOR. I've taken it for seven cycles, all told, including the one that actually worked!

I think if you trust your dr and he has answered all of your questions then only you and him can decide that. If you go right to IvF then that's what you decide. No one on here can tell you if its medically ok or not. Your dr knows all of your history and your DH. There is a risk with all of this, all of the meds and all procedures. It's up to you what you are willing to do. Good luck in your decision

Do people typically use Clomid or Femara by itself, or is it usually done with an IUI? I don't want to overdo it with an IUI but I don't want to "underdo" it either. My DH's post wash count is 29mil. Raw is like 75? Again, I just want to minimize chances for twins because it could really cause complications for me.

The IUI itself doesn't increase the chances of multiples. Having multiple follicles increases those chances.
