Provera and pcos

So my new obgyn put me on provera as needed for pcos. Protocol right now is use after 5 weeks of no period in hopes of regulating. I had success last year going 3 months with a regular cycle after 1st use of provera. Right now it will be 5 weeks tomorrow and I will have to start taking it again... Has anyone done this? Re: Provera and pcos

I have, up until recently. My doctor would have me come in every 3 months for blood work, then would send the script to the pharmacy once the b/w results were back. Within the past 4 months though, I've gotten AF 2x naturally, so I haven't needed it.

Hopefully this will work!!! I have heard of every 3 months but after 5 weeks no period I never heard taking it that close together!

honestly i dont think this is a great plan.
if you have PCOS and youre not ovulating, you're not going to get pregnant. 0% chance. so im not sure what the point of taking provera every 5 weeks for 15 weeks (almost 4 months) is. you need ovulation induction rather than just hoping that you just randomly ovulate.

all of that being said i have had cycles where ive ovulated on days 40-50. are you monitoring for ovulation?? if you did naturally ovulate and then just went ahead and took provera cause it was the fifth week of no AF, you'd be putting any potential pregnancy at risk as well as overall adding hormones to your system that aren't needed.

im not sure your history or anything else but i really think you need to find a better plan with ovulation tracking at the bare minimum. def no need to take provera on a schedule without actually tracking ovulation. good luck!

I have PCOS and without birth control have very irregular periods. I would question about Metformin. It really has helped me tremendously.

Thank you everyone!!! flower wife- I called my doctor after reading yor reply. They said if I don't get AF by 35 days it won't be coming. They told me to come in for a blood test on day 33 prior starting my next dose... Low and behold AF shows up yesterday at day 33... And then made a quick exit just a few hours later! :( frustrating!!! I am going to bring everyone's suggestions up at my 6 month visit in June

ok that sounds like a doctor thats REALLY not well versed in PCOS. some doctors really don't give it much thought. PCOS is a very personal issue in that it doesn't effect every woman the same way and no two cases are exactly the same. its really just a blanket statement for ovulatory dysfunction.

its a flat out mistake to say you wouldnt get AF if you didn't by 35 days. im really sorry to say but i would find a different doctor completely, one that actually has knowledge on PCOS. there are literally DOZENS of times ive gotten AF after CD35. there are cycles i haven't ovulated until AFTER CD35. those cycles generally aren't the best for TTC as the egg quality reduces as the cycle lingers with improper hormone levels. but i know several people who have gotten pregnant on long cycles and im sure there are DOZENS of people on this board alone that will show you can absolutely get AF after CD35. im sorry to harp on it but its almost a joke that your doctor claims that. also if you got a real AF then you had to have ovulated. however, if you just got a day of spotting its possible you didn't actually ovulate (blood results will show which it is) in which case you may need still need provera. im def not saying not to take provera if you havent ovulated after 35 days.. im just saying that i would def make it a point to track ovulation during that time because you def dont need provera if you are ovulating, even if its later in the cycle. good luck! im not on here too much any more but feel free to FM if you have any specific questions.
