Mexico travel advisory

Well dh goes to Mexico City for work which I don't love, but he has to.

And there are certain parts of Mexico I wouldn't travel to. Acapulco being one. It's not something to take lightly. Other parts are different tho. Depends where.

Re: Mexico travel advisory

We just got back from Riviera Maya and felt completely safe. Our resort arranged our travel from Cancun. There were multiple police checkpoints on route to our resort and our resort security made us feel completely comfortable. DH was hesitant but we had a wonderful time with no worries. We never left our compound though. Mayakoba had multiple resorts in the same complex. The whole area was full of resorts and felt very safe.

Personally I would not go to Mexico, the drug cartels are violent and dangerous. The police are corrupt, they take bribes from the cartels who run the country.

Do some research and you will see about all the missing kids who are presumed dead. There is no accountability in Mexico and I would be scared something could happen.

This is sadly true and very under-reported.

I had gone to Mexico twice a few years back - things were not awesome then, but I was like ehhh I want to go. I loved it - don't get me wrong!!! BUT, things have gone from bad to worse and I recently had a friend who came back and he was mugged on the beach --- and there was a cop right nearby who knew and did nothing about it. So, I know the police are corrupt and nothing unsettles me more than that.

There are so many nice places -- IDK, I wouldn't risk it. And now that I have a small son?? HELLLL NOOO.

DH was very hesitant and did not want to go for several years. We flew into Cancun and got a private car from our resort. We never left our compound (shared with other resorts) and felt very safe.

Re: Mexico travel advisory

Cancun? Yes, i'd go to Cancun. The violence is almost exclusively on the US border. As long as you don't go to Juarez or another border town you'll be fine.

Cancun is almost 1500 miles away from the border. That's like saying you don't wanna go to NYC because there is crime in Miami.

Re: Mexico travel advisory

I'd go to Cancún but, hey, I'm from Colombia, so I'm not easily scared. 2 years ago we went to Cancún and Playa del Carmen with 2 girlfriends. We even went out at night and didn't have any problem. Lots of tourists in the area.

Last year I went back with DH and DS. We flew to Cancún and rented a car there. We stayed in Playa in an AI, but drove to Tulum. We didn't have any problem either. The dangerous areas, in term of drug cartels, are by the border… Mexico City faces the 'normal' problems of robbery, if you were jewelry, etc.

I just can't believe how much it's changed! I went to Cancun with my friends on spring break in 2001. We went everywhere-all the clubs, took buses into town, etc. We walked around super late at night. I never felt unsafe. I know this was 14 years ago, but it's so sad how downhill it's gone.

I feel 500% safer in Cancun then I do in Camden.

In Cancun and other very touristy cities, its not a huge drug cartel. It's like going to Disneyworld and isolated. The residents of the area know that this is their livelihood and if that area gets a bad wrap and all the tourists stop coming, everyone is going to lose their jobs.

It's def not just the border towns. Acapulco used to be a big destination, you couldn't pay me to go there. It's resort towns too.

Cancun and riviera maya is safer, but things have happened there too.

I said "almost exclusively". Bad things happen everywhere. You'd never leave your house if you thought nothing bad could ever happen.

I've gone many times, the last being May 2014.
As long as you stay in the tourist part, IMO, it's as safe as anywhere.

Obviously, I leave my jewelry & watch at home.

We carry a bit of cash & really use our credit cards.

We took 2 small kids, walked the strip, went downtown, took buses, etc.

We went over Mexican Mother's Day & were surprised by the fact that over 50% of the crowd were wealthy Mexicans at the time.

The only difference we saw was the armed guards on the beach & the lack of vendors on the beach.

This...I went for Spring Break a few times in College and personally don't see the appeal.

There are plenty of other places in the Caribbean worth seeing over Mexico IMO.
