My mom is dying and I'm looking for assistance finding help for my dad
My mom was just diagonsed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer that has spread to other organs  My sister and I are really concerned about my father and depression. My parents have Medicare and their secondary is AARP. Does anyone know where I could look to see if therapy is covered?

My mom is dying and I'm looking for assistance finding help for my dad
Fm me if you need anything at all. My mom passed of cancer in 2007. My dad was, I would even say suicidal. Look into cancer care. They offer free counseling to anyone affected by it. I did group and individual counseling with people my age who lost a parent and found it helped. My dad did it as well on Long Island (I was in the city at the time).
The commack y (Suffolk jcc) also offers bereavement groups which also helped him.
I'm so sorry you're going through this. Losing my mom was the worst thing in my life

I was also going to recommend cancer care. My mom has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to multiple other places. Watching all of this has been very hard on me- but I know it must be even worse for my dad. He has been drinking a lot and when she passes, I do worry he will need a lot of help and support. Cancer care said they help connect you with free therapy and support groups in your area. Google them and call them for more info.
 Cancer is the worst and it has def. changed my life =(

I am so sorry. I know what you are going thru, my mom died of cancer in 2004, my MIL in 2008.
Your mom's health team can make recommendations as well as Cancer Care. AARP Medicare can also make recommendations.
Have your mom contact her insurance company giving you permission to talk with them about her medical coverage. Very important. Same with the doctors.

For us, cancer care didn't give us suggestions. We were actually seeing therapists working at cancer care. Individual sessions and group. And it was free.

I'm so sorry Mici! My Aunt passed away from Pacreatic Cancer 6 years ago. I'll ask my cousin if they had used a therapist.

If your mom is being treated at a larger hospital (LIJ, MSK, NYU, etc) they will have therapy available for spouses (as well as for you and you sister). I would absolutely look into seeing if that is an option.
I am so, so sorry to hear this. While I don't know the extent of the spread, please keep in mind that many people can live for a year, 2 years, and sometimes a lot more even with stage 4 cancer. There are so many treatment options and clinical trials out there.

We've since learned her organs are starting to shut down so it is only a matter of time. She is at NorthShore.

Can a social worker at North Shore guide you to where you can get help for him? She would know if AARP covered therapy, and if her hospital offered it free of charge as some others do.

I am so sorry about your mom. My mom died of cancer in 2013 and my dad was very depressed. I care for him on my own. He got cancer too but has recovered. I found a social worker that took Medicare in smithtown- also the Y has support groups and I also found him another support group for widowers. But he has refused everything. FM me if you ever want to talk. Caring for my dad has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. I am praying for you and your mom.
