Squirrels in the attic?
Oh no!!! My husband heard something up there the other night, now sitting here I hear them. I'm assuming it's squirrels. Anyone have this issue and use an exterminator to get rid of them and roofing/gutter guy to fill holes? We are new home owners and not sure what to do/who to use exactly! We are in Brightwaters/Bay Shore area. Thanks!!!

Squirrels in the attic?
Please don't exterminate them!
We had this issue too. It was cold and they came in through the soffit. We had the hole fixed and set live traps with food in it. Caught the squirrels and let them go outside. Then left the trap up there for another few days in case one was hiding. I think there were 4-5? They're a family and need to be released together. There is no reason to kill.

Squirrels in the attic?
Leb - I am surprised that they could be caught. Good for you! My guy was not able to do it. They avoided the hav-a-heart traps successfully, as well as the traps hung outside. We had an awful time finding their entry, but finally were able to on a lovely early summer day when they were out and had it blocked up. So far so good :)
Who did you use to catch them? I'd love the person's name if ever we have them again. Thanks.

The person who fixed our soffit is someone we use for carpentry work. He fixed it during the day but they must have been inside when he fixed. We used the have a heart traps and my husband is the one that set them. I think he put peanut butter and water in there. It took about a week to catch them all. I think 3 right away and the final one almost a week later. This was all about 10 years ago so hard to remember. But we still have the trap. It's a long silver metal thing w a flat metal piece that flaps down am trapping the animal when they get the food.
But that's why I mentioned to keep the trap out for about a week in case. Eventually they'll get hungry and go into the trap. We released in the backyard and 10 years later no one has gotten back in!

Squirrels in the attic?
You were lucky! And, your DH must have special squirrel charm. We used a hav-a-heart last winter in our attic, but had no luck. Many critter trappers will tell you that squirrels are notorious for avoiding them.
In fact, a single squirrel got into my mom's empty house last year also by coming down the chimney and scared me when went over to check on it by jumping off the top of a curtain. I set our Hav-a-heart trap for it, baited with peanut butter, with no luck either. It would spring the trap, but not get caught in it. After three days we finally had to leave the back doors open for it to decide to leave. DH suggested sprinkling flour in front of each open door to see if it crossed the flour when leaving and we spotted its tracks going out so knew it was gone. I vacuumed up afterwards and made sure the damper was closed.

We called an exterminator who trapped them and released them. Do it as soon as you can...they did a lot of damage up there!

Squirrels in the attic?
I just saw a show about how to get rid of them cheaply and without harming them, you can buy a plastic thing and they get out but not come back in http://www.insideedition.com/headlines/9240-whats-in-the-attic-family-petrified-of-strange-noises-upstairs

agree, but you must not relocate them, they must stay in the area it their territory, this is something I learned when I worked at volunteers for wildlife.
Once you get them out just close off the hole, and they will never return, they are just looking for a safe place to sleep, just like any good mama

Who did you use? Also, did they search out and patch holes/access points?

My husband will not go anywhere near them. So we need some assistance. I honestly don't care if they catch and release as long as they stay out of my attic!

I am sorry. Maybe I didn't make myself clear but we released them in our backyard! I know that you shouldn't take them far away bc they'll try to get back "home" and probably die. So we fixed the problem (soffit) and they never came back in. I like to think they still live back there!
To the OP there are definitely companies that will take care of it for you but find one that does so humanely! Squirrels are actually really sweet and have an awesome family dynmanic.

leb, I did think you release them far away, I was agreeing with you just adding for the op not to release them on a different street.
