Moving far from home
Has anyone ever moved far enough away where you really had to "rebuild" a life for yourself? (New friends, doctors, restaurants, etc etc) What was the transition like? How long did it take for home to feel like home?

Moving far from home
I have done it multiple times before marriage. I guess at the time it felt like it took time but looking back now I never felt like it took time at all

Re: Moving far from home
I moved here when I got married. This is not home to me, but now that I have a DS I am very involved in the community. So while I never say I'm from Long Island, it is home now.

Re: Moving far from home
Yep me. Moved from long island to Rye New hamphire. Ive been here for one year now. Ive found all new drs, places to go to eat and shop, and schools for my kids.. For the friend situation im still trying to meet woman i can hang out with. This has been difficult. But im here with my two kids, dh and inlaws (inlaws live next town over). I feel like im still trying to blend in lol. But i dont regret the move. I feel it was best for my children.

Moving far from home
Yes. It will never feel like home for me the way LI does, but we have zero regrets. We have no kids and are in a city so it's been a fun adventure trying new places on the weekends, meeting all kinds of people, etc. Ive never been the type to have a huge group of friends though so it's not like I left a huge network behind. Main downside is that I miss my parents and know that I am not readily available to them in an emergency.

Re: Moving far from home
We moved when we got married. Dh's job transferred us to a new state. I would say it took us about two years to really acclimate here.

Re: Moving far from home
I moved here from Michigan. It took me about two years before I had a well established set of friends. Everything else was no big deal... unless you're moving from a city to a rural area or vice versa, etc... 'a suburb is a suburb'.
Will be easier to make friends I'd say if you have school aged children.

Yes. Takes time to rebuild a life. Definitely can be slow going if you don't have alot of interests. But no regrets at all. Quality of life trumps all else for us to be honest. Took time to find all things you listed, but well worth it.

Re: Moving far from home
In 2012 DH got a job in Tampa. We moved down there to be with him. It took several months for it to feel like home, but I was not working so I was able to join a bunch of moms groups and met a lot of really nice people, most of whom I am still friends with even though we moved back to LI last year. Almost all my friends had no family around as well so we would spend holidays together. If my FIL hadn't gotten sick we would have stayed down there. We loved it.

Re: Moving far from home
Originally from Hudson Valley.
Moved to NYC after college then to LI after I met DH.
I know a lot of people (especially through work) but it does take effort to get to be FRIENDS with people as an adult.
It's so different compared to HS and college friendships.
I often feel people already have their built in groups, and many grown women can be so catty and non-inclusive.
I've noticed this in particular with a lot of the "wives" in our circle.
I'm actually making more of an effort to get out there and meet new people this year through my own local community and I also don't mind going out and doing stuff on my own to keep my head busy and so I "feel" social if that makes sense....

Re: Moving far from home
Yes, I'm on my third move (four if you count a study abroad move, but that's not really "living") in 10 years.
This last move has been really difficult for me. CIt takes a few years I think.

Moving far from home
DH and I moved from LI to Virginia in 2010. Took some getting used to and it is difficult to make new friends (we didn't have any children at the time) but we are happily settled now. W definitely miss family and friends though and travel back to NY often. We have a great, happy life here and I wouldn't change it but LI will always be my home.

Moving far from home
yes 3 times since being married in 2008 lol First time was really far. From LI to Utah the month after being married, and the first month by myself in an hotel. Talk about fun times lol. This was before kids. Thank goodness I had a teaching job set before I went. That really kept me busy.
We have a history in CT. DH bought this house in 2006, we moved in 2008, then back to CT 2010, but a few months later moved to Boston for 2 more years and then finally moved back to CT in 2013. ad been back since. All our family is on LI. we are 1 1/2 hr away but still far enough.
It's been an adjustment but with my 2 kids I am very active, found a moms group I am involved in, and with dd1 in preschool we keep busy.
It's so hard and I still say I'm from LI when asked lol. It's an automatic. So far I haven't hated anywhere we lived, but here in CT I like the most b/c it's the closet to family. I missed a lot living far away.
My DH would move back west in a heart beat.
It takes time and energy to make a home and friends somewhere new but it's also a good thing.

I did the opposite. We have been here for 9 years.
Even though we are not 'far' from where I grew up- it's about an hour and a half away- I did have to find new doctors, new friends, new routines, etc.
For me the biggest adjustment was the distance to everything. I lived in Queens for most of my 20s and into my 30s and my neighborhood was great. I really only drove to work and was able to get groceries, etc, on foot. I loved that.
Making friend was also pretty hard. I became a Daisy leader with two moms I knew slightly and became good friends with them. Fortunately, it seems like most of the moms I've met are not from here- I have met a lot of people from LI actually- and that's helped because I haven't had to deal with established groups of moms. That would have been really hard. Having my daughter start school definitely helped me enjoy living here more because I've met people through school events and DD's activities. I am really happy we live here.

Moving far from home
we moved to FL 8 yrs ago- we knew no one. No family or friends here. Started a new job, met neighbors and met friends, found doctors and favorite restaurants and everything else. The first year was very hard, you do need to give it time and an honest effort, as this doesn't happen overnight. But around 1.5 yrs into it, I loved it. Loved our area, eventually bought our house and had DD. We never looked back, and will never return "home" to NY. This is really our "home".

Moving far from home
We were supposed to start the process this past summer but then DH had a medical issue that we had to have taken care of. Now MIL has a medical issue but as long as everything is going good for both DH and MIL our plan is to put the house on the market in April right after tax season. DH is a CPA. The thought of leaving family and friends scares us. I am not really one to make new friends. But a couple that we are close with is actually moving to the same town as us so that will help. We do have family where we are going but it's not the same as having your friends. Eventually my inlaws will move too. I feel our kids will have a much better life out of long island and while this is home now, it's not our forever home. We both feel we are not where we belong, if that makes sense.

Moving far from home
Said it before.... I moved to NYC on a whim and had no relatives, no job, nothing. I don't think it was impossible. Just different. Took no time to get settled. I'd say less than a year? I was so busy LEARNING the city and the areas that that flew by!

Not to highjack...but for those that did it, how was it to leave your family and friends behind?

Re: Moving far from home
i've done it multiple times. i find that the hardest part is the initial items: changing address, new drivers license, changing car registration. after that, most things happen as needed.
right now, i'm on the hunt for a new dentist.

It sucks! My parents are retired so they come and visit frequently, but I only see my sister, friends, and extended family Christmas, Easter, and then we usually go down for 2 weeks in summer.

I actually like the distance.
I've also always been pretty independent which helps.

Re: Moving far from home
We just did this. DH has always disliked LI, so when he really pushed to move to MA I wasn't at all surprised. DH got permission to work from home for 6 months and the clock started ticking. We stayed on the Cape for 6 months. I looked for towns around Boston (where DH was looking for work) that best fit what we wanted in a town. When DH found a job, we had 7 weeks before he started. In 7 weeks I found a job, a house, an apartment and program for our 1 year old. We had to rent for 2 months while we waited to close on our house. We just closed on our house a few weeks ago. We have started finding doctors and getting settled. The hardest thing so far was being so uncertain with what was going to happen and leaving the comfort of my family and friends.

Hard for me. We've lived 3+ hours away from our families for over 7 years and it's still hard. I feel like it's even worse now that I have my DS and my siblings are starting to have DC.

Re: Moving far from home
We'll be moving to Austin next summer, but DH lived there for 10 years when he was in his 20s so he has a good network of friends down there already.
I've gone to visit a few times and have made friends with his group already so that is a huge plus.
I'm still nervous about learning to drive around a whole new area (have a mental map of pretty much all of LI) and finding new doctors etc.
A lot of the neighborhoods have changed since DH lived there so it will be a learning experience for both of us to find out what are the good/bad areas, where to go on the weekends, etc.
We are planning on renting for a year or two when we first go down and then look for land to build our dream house. That way we know what area we really want to be our forever home and aren't stuck as if we bought when we first move down.
