The more I have read on this thread (and what is going on in the school above regarding the surplus) - it's all aggravating. I guess because I know we all pay some of the highest school taxes in the country right? And you're all right - it is like you're constantly being hit up for money everywhere you look. With all that we pay and all the yearly increases usually, it's crazy to have to open your wallet in regards to school. Last year the class mom wanted $20 each from each parent for the gift. It just feels like a lot of financial pressure I suppose. Field trips are great but not mandatory to education. They are an asset of course but not the end all be all.

Sometimes I wish things went back to basics. Where school was about learning and book reports. Not selling wrapping paper and candy and silent auctions and etc. I know it's all to support the schools but where do you draw the line, you know? Especially when we live in such a high priced area such as Long Island and the majority of the property taxes goes to the schools.

Then we have to deal with common core shenanigans that from what I read have a lot to do with $$$$$.

Maybe I'm wrong. It is nice to have great schools that flourish. I won't deny that. And I don't know where every single cent gets spent but sometimes the schools feel more like a business than an educational entity.

I guess there's no good answer. I just don't know.

Not looking to debate. I know there are many sides. Just my feelings after reading this thread. :/

I get what you're saying totally. Actually this morning, I'm choosing to take DS to the PTA pancake breakfast over a starting package of $35 soccer pictures. (Nothing less than that).

It's always something.

We also cant afford to contribute every week to a PTA fundraiser even though I would like to, or send DS on trips and events.

It's tough because there's also often this underlying feeling here on Long Island more than any other place I've ever lived in NY that you HAVE to do these things, and you feel bad if you don't.

I think as parents we need to learn to stop feeling guilty and do the best we can.

I'm the volunteer coordinator at our school and also keep track of membership of the PTA. At our school, only 20% of the school joins and pays the membership dues. The majority of the school does not contribute to all the events and fundraisers. The same handful of parents usually do most of the volunteering and are the ones who are trying to fundraise.

You are not obligated to participate. We have our first field trip for K next week and I know they have not collected from all the students. At our school, we have funds available to help out financially those children whose parents can't afford to pay for the field trip or similar events.

Our school overwhelmingly hated selling overpriced junk as fundraisers. Instead, we are doing a readathon to promote reading. No one needs to buy anything and all proceeds go directly to the PTA. Again, you don't need to participate. I look over our PTA budget every month and parents and teachers vote on what the school needs and wants most to enrich the children.

So here is my question- kind of off topic but kind of not..

This whole sending in 25 glue sticks, 100 pencils, etc at the beginning of the year- when I went to school we had to supply our own supplies, yes, but it was just for US.

So a glue stick for us- and if we ran out, we'd have to get a new one. For OURSELVES.
A box of crayons- for US to use personally.
Tissues for OUR desk.

Why is it now that each kid is supplying like 25 glue sticks? Does each child USE 25 glue sticks?
If not, where are those extra glue sticks going?

Please enlighten me...

They pool supplies in the younger grades. Unfortunately not everyone sends in supplies so the extra supplies are to the supplement for the student(s) who won't be sending in the supplies.

When the kids get older, kids have to use their own supplies. Some kids can't afford to buy the supplies. At our school, the PTA raises funds to buy supplies for those students in need.

I love teachers but that is insane. I work my ass off too and no one gives me a big gift at work.

When I was class parent I was told we were not supposed to say how much money we needed per family (that high), only we were able to say 'about $7 per family' for the end of the year gift. Teachers at my school are not supposed to get more than $250 at the end of the year (and that amount is lower for assistants, paras, etc).

For the supplies, we don't have to buy specific items, but we are asked to send $50, so they can buy they stuff they need and have the supplies storage for the rest of the year. Knowing some parents won't pay, some families can give out more if they want.

Not to sound harsh, but kids cost money. They need money for new clothes every year, school supplies, medical care, school activities, etc. I'm not made of money myself but you have to find a way to budget for the things your child needs, it is your responsibility as a parent.

You know what....I'm a single mom, I have a deadbeat ex, he pays no child support. When I had my son, we had two incomes. Now I support him on mine alone. It is HARD to do.

Sometimes people fall on hard times, or situations change. I have been lucky that I have not had to look to other forms of help (YET) but my son's teacher has let me pay late for a field trip ($15) because I didn't have it when it was due because of these circumstances.

I understand that, I never said financially caring for kids was an EASY thing to do, it's not. They always need something and along with what they need you also need money for ten thousand other things as well..........debt, bills, food, etc.

But ultimately, as parents, we have to just figure out how to manage it all and somehow make it work because we don't have much of a choice.

My son was hospitalized with pneumonia earlier this year, two days in the hospital cost me OVER $6K out of pocket and that was WITH insurance. I wasn't banking on that expense but we had to figure it out. It's just how life goes. If your kids need money for something whether it be a field trip, or medical care, or clothes, or anything else somehow you just have to find a way. And it's NOT easy all of the time.

Sorry but I constantly see your responses to things like this and am just shocked. Maybe you don't realize how it comes off.

There are children in this country that go to bed hungry every night. Hungry. That's how seriously financially wrecked their family is. Its just awful and so horribly sad.

So for many families, a field trip is not necessity and CAN NOT be a necessity- they are much more worried about making rent and getting some food on the table.

That's how my dh grew up- child of a single parent when my MIL was widowed at the age of 25.

I consider my family lucky and blessed that we don't have to make that decision- but I'd never look down my nose and think another parent wasnt doing the best they could because they couldnt afford a field trip.

Paying for a field trip?

Just my $0.02
I've been a HS teacher in a low-middle class district where just about everyone could go on the field trip with no problems (apparently) I always always told the students to see me privately if they needed help financially- with anything. I can remember only a handful of times, but I did pay for some field trips.
I also collected surplus school supplies at the end of the year (at locker cleanout) I saved the stuff in my closet and always offered free binders, dividers and paper to kids who couldn't afford it the following year. Again, maybe 5 kids per year took advantage.
Fast-forward to today, where i work in somewhat impoverished high-needs districts. I understand the needs of the students and do my best to provide things for them as needed. Yes, I still recycle lots of old binders, and I always hit up dollar tree for some great pens. I have even called some pen suppliers for surplus or customized pen errors and they send them for free. Having said that, we limit field trips, often do virtual tours, and pay when we can. I remember saving up spare change with 2 other teachers 3 years ago to buffer the cost of going on a field trip to the HOlocaust Memorial & tolerance center in Glen COve.
Despite the fact that I can't afford to help them all, I do what I can. I think most teachers are like this... we don't expect gifts or rewards! I get more gifts from my club than my actual students.

Wow. I have to say, that's a pretty fuc k d up thing to say. I'm on here pretty frequently and I don't recall this poster being like this.

I think I recall what her husband does for a living and I doubt he was just handed that position. People work hard to get where they are in life.

I also don't think they are rolling in dough either. I recall many hard times she has posted about.

I've gotten a lot of great financial tips from Hofstra about saving in money in fact.

There are some really petty, jealous b!tches on this site.

And I call THAT as I see it.

Some people really need to get a life and not be so concerned about details you know nothing about some stranger on a message board.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

I was in school a long time ago and I remember my mom sending me in with money to pay for the trip. School trips cost money. Who else is going to pay for them? As a teacher, I have had students who couldn't afford to pay. I have paid or I could get the school to help. However, it does get frustrating when students have cell phones, $200 pair of sneakers, and their parents have better cars than me, but somehow they can't pay for a trip.

As for school supplies, in my last school I paid for almost all my kids school supplies. The parents did not send them in with things that they needed for class. The school did not help me pay for them. Again, frustrating when the kids come into school with cell phones and they can't afford school supplies. In my school now, I still pay for classroom supplies, but for the most part the kids come in with supplies. Also, the school has supplies to give to kids if they need it.

Kids do cost a lot of money these days. It is what it is. If you are having trouble paying for things for your child the school will always help out and so will the PTA. In my school the 5th grade dues are $100. That is the cost of the yearbook, trip, and tshirt. If there are students who can't pay teachers will chip in and pay for the students.

I have been in two schools and the teachers in both schools have been very generous. From helping out with field trips, bringing in lunch for students, donating dresses and dress pants, giving parents money to buy medication for their child and gift cards to buy groceries. Teachers are not here to try to suck the money out of you. Most of us are hard working and care deeply about children.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Just wanted to add one more thing. My school requires the teachers to plan at least 4 field trips a year. Even if we didn't want to go on field trips (because it is a lot more work than teaching) we have no other option but to plan them.

My DD has had some free field trips (I believe they were funded by some grant). Where I teach, the kids pay for the field trips. If there is a child with financial hardship, the school finds a way to pay (I'm honestly not sure where the funds actually come from!). I don't know any teacher who pays out of their pocket, since we have this system in place.

Of course...nothing is free when it comes to school. They want your money whichever way they can get it.
