picky dinner guests
Hi all!
What would you serve to a family who have adult picky eaters?
They don't like italian - or pasta. Any one dish recipes you can share?

Chili? Pulled chicken or pork? If it doesn't have to be one dish, maybe chicken cutlets and/or steak, mashed potatoes?

I would do a nice marinated skirt steak or filet, herbed fingerling potatoes and a vegetable like sautéed asparagus or roasted broccoli tossed with parmesan and lemon. I think that's a more elegant take on a steak dinner.
Alternatively, you could do crispy breaded chicken cutlets, rice pilaf and a vegetable like above if steak is too cumbersome. Make a nice pan gravy with lemon juice and chicken stock.
Now I'm hungry.
ETA: I'm not much help when it comes to one pan dishes since I don't care for many casserole recipes out there.

It depends on what they do eat.
I find a main dish & sides better than a one dish meal for picky eaters, so people can avoid the parts they don't like.

That's very similar to what I did last month for my FIL's birthday.
Marinated Grilled Flank Steak
Sautéed String Beans
Roasted red skinned potatoes
Grilled Corn with vinaigrette ( grilled on the cobb & then removed & tossed with the dressing.)
I knew they were red meat eaters, but picky on the vegetables.

I agree with the suggestion about meat and several sides. And most people like chicken cutlets.
You could also make some kind of bread so they can fill up on that if anything.

I don't think not eating pasta is a picky eater. I don't eat pasta but I'm not a picky eater.

Then you can do a potato dish, a couple of veggies, some rolls, etc.

I come from a family of picky eaters! I have no idea how I came from that (I'm not picky). I'd ask them what they like and go from there.

Are they picky or just don't like Italian?
As others mentioned, I would ask them what they like. I would also make sure I have some sides, bread and salad.
You could always put out chicken nuggets.

I was a picky eater for most of my life. When invited somewhere i just kind of dealt with what was served to me.
IMO it's rude to dictate a meal when you are an invited guest. Make something that he majority would eat.

Roasted Chicken or even a nice Roast Beef, with multiple sides including mashed potatoes, corn or carrots, a green, and rolls will please just about anyone. Ive been a pretty picky eater most of my life, and agree with PP... i never dictate the meal. If i dont like something I just eat what i do like and move on. I wont starve to death lol. But at the same time i know where you are coming from. If the ENTIRE family is picky (not just one person) why go to the trouble of cooking a meal no one will eat.

Definitely ask them what they like to eat.
OTOH, some of us have to be picky eaters due to medical reasons. After breast cancer I am not allowed to eat any red meats at all - no beef, lamb or pork, no farm raised fish -like tilapia, catfish, salmon, or anything that might have hormones in it, meaning that I have to be careful about chicken and dairy products - milk, yogurt, cheese, ice-cream, etc., as my cancer is highly hormone receptive.
I often find myself eating a plateful of vegetables and starches when I go places. But, that's not a bad thing! Oh, I also have to avoid soy also as it mimics estrogen.
I actually brought quinoa to a dinner party so that I could have a balanced meal as it's high in protein. I made enough for everyone and the hostess and her boyfriend, after looking at it suspiciously, ended up loving it so much she makes it herself now.

See I wouldn't consider you a picky eater. You are doing it out of medical necessity. Just like someone with Gluten issues.
To me picky is "I don't want it just because".

I HATE formal dinner parties .......Who are you feeding? Are they good friends you're comfortable with? Or is it like a stuffy formal business type of thing?
If they're good friends I'd do apps for dinner that's always a crowd pleaser - and dessert -
For a formal thing ........Roasted chicken, steak ......maybe a shrimp scampi - What exactly does 'picky' mean?
I'm not very good at all w/ prepping and serving a formal meal -
also I'm  b/c why do people always say "a nice steak ..........a nice salad........a nice whatever" when describing food ??

So funny! The alternatives are hilarious to consider: Come by for: a smelly ... rancid ... dried out ... overcooked steak, a leftover lettuce salad ... unwashed salad ... slightly moldy pie ... stale cake

Thanks all! Sorry I didn't provide a lot of info in my original post!
This is for good friends. It's an awkward sitation, when we ask they get strange at the implication that they are picky. They say they don't care, but they really don't say what they want either. UGH.
I think I am going to take the safe route and do chicken and mashed potatoes.
