All I am saying is that for every other teacher I have had (and granted it's not a lot since DS is my oldest), I got a basic letter saying:
This is how I give homework (every day / once a week for the whole week),
This is how I would like things returned (left side of folder/keep at home, right side/bring back)
And here is now you can contact me.
Every teacher (3 in total) did that.
That's the experience I have had to date.
I never had issues with returning things that needed to be returned.
If things are different and DS needs to be more responsible I am fine with that.
But I need to know how I can partner with her and reinforce with DS what he needs to do.
It's simply setting expectations and communication.
FWIW, I bumped into a fellow mom today at Starbucks who happened to have this teacher last year and confirmed that she was not very good.
It is what it is, and I am more than happy to work with my son at home as much as he needs it.
I'm just going off previous interactions with their teachers which were all wonderful.
Listen, I'm not trying to crucify the poor woman, I just want to know what I, as a parent, need to do to ensure that my son succeeds this year.

I think this is really the crux of the whole thing.
If you want to know, no teacher will deny you the opportunity to have a sit down discussion with her or at least a phone call to find out - especially if you do not have a back to school night.
Don't mention the letter. Just reach out to her and ask if you can have a conversation with her.

1st grade is a new ball park compared to K. They are taught responsibility from day one and every teacher has there own way of running a class. My older 2 are in 2nd and 3rd grade and this was the first time I ever received a welcome letter and all it contained was info on the teacher. Nothing that will be going on in class.
As far as what a fellow mom told you art Starbucks, everyone will have there own opinion on the teacher based on there own experience. My DD had a preschool teacher that I HATED for HER. My DD cried for months. It stopped and my DD never really spoke to her but liked her. She was an excellent teacher, just not for her. If my other DD had her, she would have been fine.
Does the district have website with the school and then a teachers page? If they do, she may have info on there,

I would be more concerned about the school not having a curriculum night, where parents can ask questions and get to know the classroom and the teacher. I would raise that concern.
About the teacher, I would give her some time before forming an opinion and keep talking to your DS to see how he feels, if he is happy going to school, etc - I know it's difficult because DS's answers are always "I don't know", "I don't' remember", but sometimes they can surprise you

would it be worth looking into changing teachers while still early in the year?

You know, at first I was thinking you were overreacting, but now I kind of don't blame you for being 'concerned'.
DD started K this year and we had an orientation and tonight is a back to school night. Orientation was aimed solely at the kids. I am hoping to get more info tonight, but I haven't gotten any info thus far, either.

I think you have every right to get detailed expectations.
I am very pro teacher.
Just got home from volunteering in two different classes.
You can't call for parent involvement if you are not involving them.

Is there an open house? I know at our open houses we go into more depth about the curriculum.

I have honestly never heard of a school not having an open house/back to school night. That would anger me the most.
