question about Thyroid

I just got my prenatal bloodwork back from the doc and she said everything was normal except my Thyroid came back abnormal i think she said it was 5.830 - (hypo).. She told me to follow up with endocrinologist or my primary care doc.. I had a regular physical back last month and my thyroid was borderline then.. but now Im preggers so she said they may have to put me on medication.. I don't know much about hypothyroidism... what # is normal range and does anyone have this? Im trying not to google, lol. They mentioned something about possibly going on Synthroid.. Im kinda nervous will this affect my baby? sorry so many questions Im just not familiar with any of this :(

Re: question about Thyroid

With my first I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. 2010. I took levothyroxine the generic of synthroid I've had 2 very healthy boys and now I'm a day late from my due date of my lil girl. No worries on the meds everything has been great. It's actually bad for baby if ur thyroid isn't under control.

I go to dr vaswani in garden city. I love him. 516-739-0414

Thank you so much!! I actually meant is it bad to NOT be on medication for my thyroid.. I'm nervous since I'm only 9 weeks preggers. They also said I don't have to go to endo doc if I would rather go to Primary doc which I feel more comfortable doing you think that's ok? I'm just trying not to google since I have a serious problem with that, LOL.

If your thyroid is out of range it could be from other hormonal fluctuations in early pregnancy. THey may put you on a low dose of synthroid and recheck you in another couple of months. You absolutely should get it checked out though. My doctor likes to see me around 1.8-2.0 (although I do fluctuate as high as 3.5). I am on synthroid permanently.

when pregnant, you should be below 2.3 or so. Your number is not SUPER high, but a bit above average. I was floating around 15.8 when I get pregnant... my meds needed to be adjusted the entire pregnancy.

at a 5.8, my endo would absolutely put me on low dose synthroid. Maybe 25 or 50 mcg to begin

question about Thyroid

I have Hashimotos (hypothyroid) 10yrs now, and for both pregnancies had to get increased Synthroid/Levothyroxine. My endo explained that in early pregnancy your baby does not produce it's own thyroid hormone so they have to increase/supplement your own in order to cover you and your baby. It is very important to have the right levels. There is no side effect to baby, however you not having enough hormone can cause major issues.

I can tell you that it took my body about a month to adjust (everyone is different) but my bloodwork since then has been excellent.

question about Thyroid

Was diagnosed as hypo a few years ago. Saw an endo, went on low dose medication and now it's normal. Had no side effects from medication.

Re: question about Thyroid

i dont recall my levels but they were off too. i was put on levothyroxine and everything was fine. it is more dangerous to have out of whack thyroid levels then to be on the thyriod med. my PCP was able to take care of my prescription for me...once she got the dosage correct (you have to go for bloodwork every week or two to make sure they are giving you the right amount) my OB was able to just refill my prescription
