Ebola?

Anyone following this story?

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28498665

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/nigeria-confirms-ebola-death-24719171

If it gets out of control in Nigeria, I'm a bit scared...

Wasn't Ebola around years ago in Africa and tons of people died?

From what I read (because I'm becoming unhealthily obsessed with this story Chat Icon ) is that it pops up here and there. Scientists believe it comes from the local diet of the bushmeat there (rats, mice, and bats) and the bushmeat is the main carrier. From there it is passed to humans. Scientists haven't figured out yet how it appears in mice, rats, and bats yet.

But yes it comes and goes and spreads easily between people from local funeral rights, bodily fluids, sweat, and just all around lack of sewage, etc.

That being said, this is the first time it has been transmitted by someone on an airplane and now it is in Nigeria. The guy that boarded the plane had no symptoms and by the time he landed he was vomiting. He died a few days later. There were 50 people on that plane and they haven't isolated them, but are watching them. There are A LOT of people in Lagos.

I don't think they have seen it in a major city yet. This is also the worst death toll yet. Lagos is a major hub in that part of the world, and I have no faith that the government and medical care in Nigeria will do as much as it possibly can. I'm not much of an alarmist, but I am a bit nervous about this one. Chat Icon

Congo 2012 - 36 deaths
Congo 2007 - 187 deaths

its rather common. Congo has had cases in 07, 08 and 12.

Ebola pops up every 2-4 years in that general area. Some think its a disease of the long past, but its very much still around.

This one though is being a attributed a lot more deaths than any in the past.

Generally Ebola is centralized in Africa .. I hear because the victims think its Malaria.. and as some go to village doctors they are mistreated and spread the disease.

Re: Ebola?

I was thinking of this post when I was reading about the US bringing the 2 infected Americans back home. Now it's here. Hoping and praying for their recovery and it doesn't transmit any further. The international community really needs to come together for this and quickly.

Im not happy they are coming here. I don't trust the cdc as far as i can throw them. And i've worked in top notch hospitals. Infection control is just poor. I would NOT want to be working with those cases, sorry.

I'm ok with it. I think if it was my loved one, Id rather have them treated here than over there.

I have an over active imagination and it's just running wild with possible ways this could go wrong. I'm hoping and praying that they can help these two Americans, and maybe even find a cure/vaccine in the process. But I'm more than concerned about all the things that could go wrong.
