Would you not do fireworks if you knew...

I saw something on the news here in Cali that Veteran's could get signs for their front lawns saying they had PTSD and to please refrain from setting off fireworks. People are a$$es if they know someone suffers from this and light fireworks anyway.

Re: Would you not do fireworks if you knew...

Vets around where I live are talking about this. (I live in an area where vets are a dime a dozen). Before sun down they are already in their basements or other quiet corners with the air conditioning and TV blasting to mitigate the noise. But the overall consensus I get from speaking with them is that they expect it and while the first few minutes can cause some anxiety, they do become desensitized pretty quickly.

What's worse are the days people just start blowing off fire works on a random Thursday night. I was at a party two years back with some vets. A neighbor set something off and it made a noise that sounded like a grenade. One vet hit the ground real fast.

ETA: Not to say I think it's ok to do it knowing there is a vet close by. I think it's rude actually. But people are going to do it anyway.

This is my DH. He has a very, very hard time with the 4th and we have never been to a fireworks display. He gets very uneasy when the "booms" start going off and we typically stay indoors.

Maybe I'm a jerk - but I'd anonymously call the cops on the neighbors when they start doing the fireworks.

I'm soooo upset reading this. As a daughter of a vet, I have the utmost respect for our soldiers and this kind of cr@p really makes me mad. Shame on your neighbors.

Re: Would you not do fireworks if you knew...

How could people set fireworks off knowing someone with PTSD lives in the area? That's horrible!

My parents told me from a very early age that amateurs setting off fireworks could have disastrous effects so I've always been afraid of them. Unless they burst in the sky like the Macys show, I dislike fireworks!

I wonder if you could call a local Amvets or VFW and get them involved. To know he goes in the basement and suffers from ptsd is absolutely horrible. Sorry, but your neighbors suck. That's a really dicky thing to do.

Omg that is so sad. I think fireworks should be left to professionals so no I wouldn't do them, especially if I knew someone was suffering like that.

Re: Would you not do fireworks if you knew...

The neighbors told DH that the cops come by and watch. We haven't been here for the 4th before so I'm not sure if that's true. We called the cops when someone in the area was setting them off last week late at night. If it's bad tonight I will again. I have no problem doing that.

Re: Would you not do fireworks if you knew...

I remember a fireworks thread causing drama once (I think it was last year) because a bunch of girls said that basically everyone needs to suck it up and deal at this time of year.

A couple ladies on here mentioned their DHs who were vets and it actually brought a lot of awareness....at least to me.

One word. ..selfish.
Another word....illegal.
IMO they are assholes.
I wouldn't call the police on people setting off fireworks normally but in this case I'd call and report their trashy asses.

Agreed.

Last year my dd was still an infant and people were setting them off at like 10 at night like 3 days after the 4th. I felt like such an old crotchety woman as I watched her monitor flash with "noise" praying she didn't wake up. In general unless it's a show I find them annoying and loud.

I hate street fireworks to begin with but that is just awful that they still do them knowing that about this man.

Makes me wonder how many others are hiding in basements bc of it. Chat Icon

I agree.

Thirty years ago, as a teen, we went to a 4th of July party and a Vietnam Vet was there. As soon as the neighborhood fireworks started he was in the basement, headphones on stereo playing trying to drown them out. He said he usually vacationed in Canada during July 4th weekChat Icon to avoid the fireworks.

I often think of the more recent vets and the fireworks.

That's disgusting and the people who know this and do it anyway should be ashamed of themselves. Torment a veteran on the 4th of July? despicable!

No way and it's disgusting that anybody would. Unbelievable that a man who fought for the freedoms this day celebrates can't be free on this day. :( my husband had that after returning from war sad it's no joke. He couldn't sleep in the same Bed bc he would wake up disoriented and hit anything (me, the dog) that moved. Still can't wake him up by touching him. Must just yell his name until he wakes. Fir 3-4 years on the 4th he drank heavily. To the point of passing out ( I know, not a great option) just so he could sleep through this! How dare they. My blood is boiling.

I can't believe people would do such a thing. That poor man is traumatized fighting for those jerk's freedom, and they intentially do this? Sorry, no. I'd call the cops.

I saw an awareness article posted on FB about this earlier this week and thought it was awesome for someone to share.

We don't do fireworks either, but I think it's awful that they know there is someone affected and are still doing them as evidenced by the basement comment.

I jumped a few times this week when they went off randomly so I can just imagine what someone with PTSD goes through.

We live in a selfish society though so I can't imagine this stopping anytime soon.

What is their justification for continuing setting them off knowing their is a man a block over freaking out? Have they ever voiced why they still do it?
