Questions on flying with an almost 2 year old

We're going to Disney and I'm starting to get nervous about flying with DS2. We bought him his own seat although I don't know if he'll actually sit in it. Do I need to buy a CARES harness? We're not taking car seats with us.

We're flying Jet Blue. Should I also bring a portable DVD player to keep him entertained?

I plan on bringing crayons, coloring books, board books and plenty of snacks. What else should I bring to keep my toddler occupied on the flight? Any must have toys to pack?

I'm bringing the boys' sport water bottles. Will I be allowed to bring them through security filled with water or do I need to wait to buy water at the airport?

Any other advice for flying with an energetic and fairly difficult 2 year old?

Thanks!

DS2 sounds just like your DS. He couldn't sit still and we flew to Aruba which is a much longer flight. When we went to DW in the Fall I think he was a bit better bc it was a shorter flight and we went super early so he was tired... Although he would never sleep on the plane. Only naps in his crib. Chat Icon
Here's some good activities
Ipad with movies and games
coloring book, stickers and crayons (make sure they're washable)
snack (we did fruit snacks, crackers, goldfish, annies bunnies, etc)
bought juice and water at the airport bc they won't allow you to bring the liquids. Just buy after you go through security. You also have to watch when you open on the plane bc of the air pressure. We learned it could explain.
extra outfit, diapers, wipes, Lysol wipes
plastic bags for dirty diapers,

Good luck.

I just buckled my DS using the lap belt.

I wouldn't bring the DVD player as Jet blue has the TVs and they have Nick.

Buy a new toy and don't give it to them until you are in flight.

I always just bought water on the other side so I didn't have any hassle.

DD is 2.5 and we always fly with a car seat. We bought a Cosco Scenera (about $50) just for traveling since it's lightweight and fits perfectly in an airline seat. We use it for safety but we also use it for familiarity. When we get on the plane she jumps right in.

I know it's a pain in the butt to carry it, but since you're concerned about DS2 it might make the flight a little easier for him and you.

Aside from that, as another poster said, get a new toy and give it to him on the plane. (try and hold out as long as possible!). Also, if you have an ipad, that always keeps them occupied.

Good luck and have a great time in Disney!!

I've used the Cares harness in the past but, I don't think you necessarily have to have it (DS either sat in his seat or on my lap when he needed to be seated - and would've done so regardless of having the harness on).

As for entertainment - do you have a tablet - I always find it's good to have and doesn't take up much room. Depending on the time of your flight - there may not be anything that grabs your DS' attention on TV (since Nick only has Nick Jr shows on at certain points of the day). I usually load a few shows on there - and also use it at our destination (since DS is used to watching what he wants, when he wants...)

You should be able to bring the water through but, I usually just buy it at the airport - it saves a little time maneuvering through security.

A cares harness will likely not fit properly even if he meets the requirements for it. What are you planning on doing about car seats whenyou get to Florida?

We flew with my dd last year to Mexico. She was a little over 2 at the time. We used the buckles on the plane; I never bought anything additional.

As far as entertainment I brought a bunch of coloring books, my iPad, and a few books. She was fine!! She actually slept most of the flight! I definitely recommend bringing extra diapers and a bag to throw them in, and a blanket.

All this!! We never even used the ipad (didn't fly jetblue) as DS was so interested in the stickers and flashcards we brought. Late flight home so he slept and he is usually a crappy sleeper

Flight to Florida shouldn't be bad as long as Jet blue doesn't cancel your flight! The flight itself goes by very quick so any new activities mentioned by the previous posters should be fine. You can definitely bring liquids from home...they just test everything out.

Good luck!

Re: Questions on flying with an almost 2 year old

I would bring a DVD player, any of his favorite books, tons of snacks and make a piggy bank out of a can with some quarters….the piggy bank kept my daughter occupied forever! I lent it to a friend for her trip and her 19 mo old son and 3.5 yr old daughter loved it too.

Other than that I bring a ton of new, little toys for the $1 section at target like a slinky and just random things like colored cotton balls from michaels, and pipe cleaners. My DD also kept busy with plastic cups, napkins, stews and sweet n low packets lol! We flew 4.5 hours with her several times now…its not easy but we come prepared.

Oh one of those etch a sketch or drawing boards, whatever they are called, the magnetic ones..magna doodle! Also have you seen the Melissa and Doug painless coloring books. I cannot remember what they are called but you fill a marker with water and they can "paint" in the picture in the book and then it dries clear. So genius. I bought it for my 2.5 year old niece and it was a huge hit! Found it at Target!

yes you can bring water in sippy cups, milk, squeeze pouches, yogurt benedryl, epi pens, we travel with so much! Once they gave me a hard time about a 4oz squeeze pouch but let it through.

I don't suggest the can with quarters if you have a child like mine. He would spend the entire trip shaking the can annoying me and every passenger around us.

Only bring quiet toys!!!

We'll take the Magical Express to our hotel and then use public transportation from the hotel (bus/boat/monorail) to travel to the different parks.

Mine would do the same thing. Chat Icon He makes enough noise without loud toys.

I think the tablet will be a lighter and easier way to go. My only concern is the only thing he's even willing to sit down and watch for more than 2 minutes is Sesame Street (generally any part with Elmo) and a little bit of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He's so different from DS1 who was mesmerized by any children's show at that age. I'm more stressed about flying with DS2 than about anything else on the trip. I will be pleasantly surprised if he behaves well and sits in his seat.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Re: Questions on flying with an almost 2 year old

Yeah DD did shake the can so I had to rig some napkins in there to keep it quiet. However like I said it kept her entertained for a long time and I am sure the passengers were ok with a little jingling vs a screaming child!
