Kindergarten & Homework

DC are not in school yet but we were at the park today and another mother told me her kindergartener gets 2 hours of homework at night. Chat Icon

Does this sound right? Even at the older elementary grades, I cannot imagine that much homework (maybe in middle school?).

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

DS gets one math page, 2 sight words 3 times each (every night), and maybe an ELA page. At most, 20 minutes.

Kindergarten & Homework

The old rule for homework was about 10 minutes per grade level, so in 5th grade they would get 50 - 60 minutes of homework a night. So to me, 2 hours in K seems way overboard. Is it continuous 2 hours worth of work, or does it take this child 2 hours all together with breaks and whatnot added in? I've taught K, and I can't imagine ever giving that amount of homework, nor would I think a K student would sit for 2 hours to complete the homework.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

They say about 15 minutes plus 15 minutes of reading a night. My 1st son had more in K - probably about 30-45 minutes without the reading (and he is a good student who did hw without issues - felt bad for kids who weren't this way). I heard that teacher cut back in recent years. My 2nd son was more in line with the 15-20 minutes or so.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

It can take my k ds over an hour to do hw. He normally gets 3 or 4 worksheets. We also have sight words to practice, a book to read every night; and shoe tying to practice. If it's something with coloring or his journal it takes so much longer.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

My son went to catholic school last year for Kindergarten. I say this because they had almost NO math homework, lol, so not sure if thats because they werent a public/common core school.

Anyway, he would have 1-2 dittos a night to complete, and he had a writing assignment every night as well. Then periodically he would get a package of sight word flashcards to review. His homework never took more than 30 minutes (unless he was being a pain and dragging it out! LOL)

Even now in first grade his homework is generally 20-30 minutes tops

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

We are asked to either read to DS or have him read to us each night for at least 15 minutes. He brings home 1-2 books on Thursday or Friday that he needs to read at least once or twice by Monday. He has a project to do once per month and brings home a traveling book that the class creates a few times per month. Other than that, he has to do a worksheet maybe once per week that takes no more than 10 minutes. He's in full day K. I've been surprised with how little homework he gets, but they seem to do a lot in school. The teacher sends home several worksheets, projects and/or books each day that he completed in school. They're also so young and don't need to start going crazy with homework yet.

Kindergarten & Homework

DD essentially has none. She has a weekly math problem to do and we are supposed to read to her every night. I know some other K teachers give them a worksheet or 2 a night.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

My DS can have a Reading assignment - read a booklet 3x or practice sight words, Handwriting/Reading sheet and Math Sheet. This can take 15 - 30 minutes.

When he has an assessment or has to practice something it can add an additional 30 minutes. Its usually one of the following: practice letter sounds, review sight word flash cards, practice writing Alphabet/numbers. But its never stressful, it can be hectic when I work at night and/or he has karate.

He did have it every day though even on the weekends.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

Honestly, I think this question is very variable because it depends on the child. Something that could take one child 10-15 min could take another an hour.

This!

Yep.. cause god help me I want to die that it takes AJ a half hour to write three lines. Why? Because its hard? nope... Because she has trouble with the words? not really or not more than expected... but because "I can't think of anything to write" and it drives me CRAZY!!!! Id say it takes a half hour on a good day more if she upsets me and then she cries which I hate and the vicious cycle starts. I won't LET her reuse the same sentences and since we've been doing this for a couple of months now, she's running up against writer's block. I try to be no where near her but there to help with words. The crap she comes up with "I can't find my pencil, its not sharp enough, my butt feels funny" all because she'd rather not do it. I force her to think of new things. Yeah, mean mom.

I'm going to lose my mind

Then its reading (which is faster) and her reading which is fine and math. So yeah. 2hours CAN easily happen.

I guess it COULD be faster if I just let her write the same three sentences very day. "I love mama. I love daddy. I love Mrs. XXXX" and she's gotten to "I like you, do you like me, yes I do" ha! "I like fish" try again "I love my mama" done it, try again "I want to play in the playground" done it, try again and on and on and on.

She has material she SHOULD be writing on which makes one of the 3 days of homework easier. But those two days she ha to come up with something original, drives us both crazy. But she manages.

Last year in kindergarten my son had much more homework than he does this year in first grade. Needless to say he enjoys first grade much much more.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

My DD is in Kindergarten and gets her HW for the week on Monday however, it doesn't ever need to be handed in so you do it at your own pace. It's just for their own reinforcement and practice at home.

I was a Kindergarten teacher, I would NEVER even think to give a kid that age TWO HOURS of HW. That's ridiculous and sounds a bit exaggerated. The HW I assigned shouldn't have taken more than a few minutes for most kids.

ETA - We are suppose to read with them every night too but I've been doing that with her every night since she was a baby so I don't really count that as HW, reading together is just part of our normal routine.

Re: Kindergarten & Homework

my son took about 30 min to 45 depending if he was in the mood. The earlier I had him do it the quicker he would get it done. He has a page to work on (was noted Monday, Tuesday etc) Read 10 min daily and practice his site words.
