Anyone get called for Jury Duty and then Reguar Jury Duty?? Please help if you can!

In October I got called for Grand Jury Duty and showed up. More or less it was going to be for one month from 9-5 and unless you received a postponement you were going to serve. I actually have travel plans during the time so they postponed me until January. Now I just received a regular jury summons for the week of December 9th!!! I am a free lancer and cannot afford to in anyway do the grand jury duty for a month, so I was thinking I would take my luck with this one and see if I get excused. My question is this....If I serve regular jury duty will I be excused from grand jury duty??? I feel like that will come in January or February. So frustrating....I just cannot afford to do this right now in my life and they are so strict about it. I am also a night grad student and when I mentioned it to the clerk saying my classes start at 5PM she told me that I would have to figure that out.

You can look on the Summons or call. It should say.

I think that it is two separate things, but I can't remember for sure. I know that Federal Court and Supreme Court are definitely separate and serving one doesn't mean you can't be called for the other.

I seem to be on a rotation where i get called for federal and then called for state within 6 months. I just mail in a copy of my proof of service and get excused.

Maybe you will get a sensitive judge who will let you off.

I got called for criminal a couple years back. It was a sex offender case that was going to be at least 2-3 weeks.

All the way out in Riverhead which is FAR from me.

I got called in around 11ish and was dismissed by noon.

The judge just basically asked if there was anyone who could not make the time commitment to raise their hand. He then dismissed us.

If I didn't have to be at work (and now I've changed jobs so it really is only me to cover), it seems like it would be a really interesting experience.

Just send in a bill from grad school.. U cant do it bc of school.

I got called for grand jury.. Went in n they asked if anyone was a college student those people were excused. I was excused bc i was 7 months at the time. The clerk told me i would b excused this time but will get another letter for jury duty in dec n at that time ill have a newborn.. She told me send back the form n a birth certificate so ill get out again.

I just did Federal in October. I was chosen for a jury but the case settled. However, we were told we were done with our obligation across the board- but I could be wrong. I just realized I never got anything from the court- they were supposed to mail something with all that info.

They are two different courts and you can get called up separately for each. However, you can get out of one if you are serving on the other. Literally the very last day I served on a two year, every Tuesday Federal Grand Jury stint I got a notice that I was called up for Suffolk County jury duty. I couldn't believe it.

I took the notice with me when I went in for my last day of Grand Jury work and asked about it. They laughed. Then they told me to walk over to the county building which was just behind the Federal building in Islip and ask to be excused and to show them the paper I was given that credited me for my two years on the Grand Jury. I did exactly that. The lady at the county court also laughed and immediately let me out of serving.

I think I might have confused everyone. My grand jury and trial jury are both for Nassau County. One is not federal. I really hope I don't have to serve on both for the same county!!!

You are not required to serve on both. Grand jury and "regular" jury duty follow the same rules. If you are called for one and serve, you have a period where you cannot be called and serve for the other. If you do get called, you need to supply them with a copy of your "proof of service." You will then be excused.

I just went through this. In July I got called for Grand Jury Duty. Showed up the first day and told them it would be a financial hardship for me because my job does not pay me for a month of Jury Duty. So they said they would postpone me and I should get a notice for regular Jury Duty. I got a notice for the end of October for regular Jury Duty. I went for 2 days before I was dismissed from the case. Now I can't be summoned for 6 years. So you don't have to do Grand Jury Duty if you do the regular Jury Duty.

2 years??? 2 years????

I would have been excused for insanity because that would have put me in a mental hospital!
