Anyones child, or know someone whos child had this? Did they wind up getting it again after antibiotics? Were they on antibiotics for a long period of time which caused them to get it?

My DD was just diagnosed. I don't recall her ever being on an antibioic, so she must have picked it up from someone else who had it.

It is highly contagious. I have been reading a lot about it, but just looking for insight from people who have dealt with it first hand....

Thanks!

Not DC, but I had it myself. I was on antibiotics for several weeks before getting it. That's not how you get it, it just makes you more susceptible since it wipes out the good bacteria in your gut. Thankfully no one else around me got it, just wash everyone's hands a lot with hot water and soap. I just recently found out that antibacterial gel does not kill it so just be aware of that. I would definitely suggest good probiotics for her as well as the rest of the family. Once you have it, it's easy to pick up again. I was taking tons of probiotics recently while visiting a family member in the hospital who caught it while there and thankfully I was ok. Hugs to you and DD! I hope she gets over it quickly!

Thank you! What did you feel like when you had it? We found out because she had diarrhea and there was blood & mucus in it, so we had it tested. but she has been complaining of her belly hurting... She is acting totally normal otherwise. I am just wondering if she would be feeling anything else. She is only 2 so she can tell me things, but not everything ya know.

I don't remember my stomach bothering me too much, just being uncomfortable with the whole situation of course. However, I was prescribed flagyl (metra something was the generic name) and that was awful. It definitely made my stomach feel terrible and I had no appetite. I remember describing that my stomach felt like it was filled with rocks. It also left a terrible taste in my mouth all the time. Nothing tasted good or was appealing. The only thing that I somewhat enjoyed was anything doused with lemon juice bc it cut the bad taste. I ate a lot of fish and chicken with lemon. Maybe try citrus flavored ice pops? I took me a few months to finally get rid of it for good. My grandmother just tested positive but she only had symptoms for one day and when they retested about two weeks later she was fine. Hopefully your daughter will get rid of it fast!

Poor baby! I had this when I was pregnant with DD. it was very painful-more than even when I gave birth. I'm thinking that since I essentially had a baby sitting on my intestines that that may have compounded the pain, but give that child extra hugs! Worst pain I've ever had in my life! I was on a second round of antibiotics for a UTI when I got it. I always mention it to my doctors when they prescribe me an antibiotic now because sometimes that changes what they give me, but I have never gotten it again and it's been 6 years. When I was pregnant with my second child I was on antibiotics for three months straight and never got it again. I always take probiotics when I take antibiotics now, as suggested by my dr. Hope your baby feels better soon!,,
I agree Flagyl is awful tasting!!!!

ETA: I was put in an isolation room on the maternity ward for a week because its so highly contagious, so be very careful!

i know more than I want to know about C Diff but not in children.

Yes the tummy hurt
Yes it was CONSTANT loose bowels
Yes it can be in you without antibiotics
Yes it can be caused by too much anitbiotics
Yes you 'keep' it once you are 'healed'
Yes its dangerous
Yes its contagious
Yes, there is a cure to it in its mild forms so take care of it!

Re: C Diff

Ugh- I had it last year- the doctor said I must have picked it up with one of my three c-sections. Then, I took clindamyacin for strep. 5 weeks later I was fine one day- then the next I was VIOLENTLY ill. I kept passing out and DH called an ambulance.

They gave me vancomyacin and flagyl. So far I am okay but I am so scared of a reoccurrence. So, I am taking probiotics.

I hope you daughter is OK! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: C Diff

I have it and still battling it eight months later . I either of it when I gave birth in February or from antibiotics while pregnant. It is highly contagious to compromised people: children, elderly, sick. I've been going on and off vancomycin and difficid for eight months. There is a known cure called a fecal matter transplant which has a 90% cure rate. They are doing these transplants in Europe but in te US it's still in testing mode. Its tough. Good luck.

2 Doctors so far have told me that if you show no symptoms, you will not be treated. 1 doctor said, if you have it, you will show symtoms almost right away.
I am reading online (Dr. Google), that you can have C Diff and not even know it. Now I am questioning everything I am reading and being told.
I wanted to get tested myself, but my doctor said since I have no symptoms and wouldn't be treated there is no point. But maybe I should know in case, so if I do have symptoms, I will not have to wait 5 days to get diagnosed? And also, if symptoms show up almost right away, than why would they say people who have no symptoms arn't treated.....
I am confused, and I am actually wondering if my whole famiily should take a trip t a specialist for some more answers?

Like many have said it's highly contagious. I recommend speaking to an infectious disease dr. They will give you the best info!

Big Hug and sorry you have to go through this...

Personally, I wouldn't want to put everybody in the family through testing if they aren't showing symptoms. I also wouldn't want to take meds unless necessary since imo that was the worst part. I never actually tested positive after being tested twice but was still given the medication. I would hope with your daughter having it already they would give any family members a rx immediately if they started to show symptoms. I'm guessing your daughter had a longer wait for a diagnosis and treatment since there was no strong reason to believe she would have it (like having been on antibiotics).

Well the stool smaples take 5 days to come back. She had blood & mucous in her stool. They tested for everything and anything, but I think they probably had an idea because of the diarrhea and blood. She also had fever a couple days before the blood started....

Also, she has been on the flagyl for a whole day now. She takes it fine. She had it processed down to a syrup because of her age. She is eating fine, acting fine etc.... Do you think it will eventually catch up with her where she is not going to have an apetite and it is going to bother her stomach?
I feel like I have read article after article, spoke with doctors, but I am still so confused. I know the basics obviously, but it seems like it affects people so different, that you really don't know what to expect....

Re: C Diff

I have no experience but I know it is no joke and contagious. Keep her hydrated. Wash hands with soap and water.
It's spores can live on surfaces for a LONG time and contaminate others from those surfaces; clean everything with bleach

Re: C Diff

My mom just got over c diff. She believes she contracted it while visiting me in the hospital after delivering.

She had loose stools and vomiting along with stomach cramps. At first she thought it was food poisoning but it didn't go away after a day or two. A week later (when she was finally able to leave the house) she got tested and it came back positive. She was put on vancomycin for 10 days.

It can be treated and there are different levels of severity like everything else. However, Once you have it there is an increased risk for relapse.

I hope she feels better!

Re: C Diff

My daughter had c diff while on antibiotics but we were pretty much living at the hospital for weeks before she caught it. I believe she caught it from the joint bathrooms in the hospital. It is extremely painful, and very dangerous. Flagyl should work, my dd wasn't so lucky though..the c diff caused my dds crohns to spiral out of control to the point that no amount of steroids or medication was working. She ultimately needed to have a total collectomy. My dds case is entirely different though since she had an underlying condition befor the c diff.

Just curious did the blood work come back positive for c diff? I'm asking bc my daughter was 3 when she started showing the same symptoms you're describing..only it wasn't c diff it was crohns. It took a month to finally diagnose her since her docs didn't believe such a young child could have uc or crohns.

Are you taking her to pediatric GI?

Yes, she came back positive for C Diff based on stool sample tests. She is acting 100% normal though. She is not in any pain, she is running around and eating fine. You wouldn't even know she had it, based on other peoples stories of them being in pain. Her stool last night was fine too, no more diarrhea and she has been on the Flagyl since Tuesday.
I am going to see how she does at the end of the 10 days on the Flagyl and decide if I will take her to a GI. If thats it, and it's gone I do not see a point since she is acting 100% normal. But, if we relapse, then yes, we will def go. We have to go back to the doctor when she is done with the Flagyl to have her tested again to make sure it is gone.
