What bothers DH is what if someone helped himself/herself to it? We just moved in and our entire back and front yard needs landscaping. He is sunburnt and sore every Sunday from hard work putting flower beds in place. I know the neighbors see this.

Granted, it is taking a long time, to think it is "funny" to give someone else's things away for free is something I cannot rationalize.

Agree with you.

Granted, it was a long time to be there. But you're making an effort. And I don't see how this neighbor thought it was OK to give some thing away that was not his.

It's not up to him to decide if you were done with it or not. Be neighborly. Ask if you need help moving it. If not and it bothered him that much. He could've called the town. Let them deal with it. Since he doesn't own the street either.

Your neighbor's actions were a bit passive aggressive BUT I think it is inconsiderate that you have left this pile of mulch in the street for an extended period of time. In my town this would be an issue since the street is actually public property.

Agreed.

I know in the Town of Oyster bay if you have work done on your house you can be fined if you have bricks/materials in your street without a permit. Not sure if its The same with mulch but i agree It shouldnt have been left out their that long

This is exactly how I see it too.

I think it's a poor way to welcome new neighbors.

While it could be moved elsewhere on your yard , if I were your neighbor, I would see the pile becoming smaller and smaller and assume you're busy with just moving in and settling in and I mean at least your taking care of your yard, kwim?

I would be happy to at least get a neighbor who takes care in their house and pride in how it looks and would view this as a temporary issue of mulch that's being worked on.

It sounds like someone has too much time on their hands.. And you have too little.

You should move it though when you can.

I don't think you're completely right, but that doesn't give someone a pass to be an assh0le.

Also, just as an aside, unless you told everyone, no one is a mind-reader that you guys have intentions of using the rest of the mulch, KWIM?

Good point. Maybe they thought you were leaving it there and they wanted it gone, since you didn't seem to be using it. So they put the sign.

I agree... The mulch has been in the street far too long... If it were on ur property alone, the sign might not have been put up. Do I think ur neighbor was out of line? Yes... But I wouldn't want to be looking at a pile of mulch in my street especially with all the taxes I pay lol I think u guys are both in the wrong.

SO said "why would they put the mulch in the street? Normally people put it in their driveways. Yes, that would annoy me looking at it for almost 2 months."

On the curb, blocking the sidewalk? Or in the street? Yeah maybe a little rude of the neighbor but way more rude of you guys for leaving it there so long.

I actully think it is other way around. Rude of you to leave it there for so long but way more rude for your neighbors to put a sign out on YOUR property (the mulch). They should have paid you a "neighborly" visit.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

I think both parties are wrong. Honestly, if you knew DH could only tackle it once a week, putting in the street just isn't right. The landscapers could have put it in your driveway, your side/back yard. Absolutely no reason for something to be in the street for almost 2 months, sorry.

BTW, I just showed this thread to DH, and his response was "isn't it too late in the season to be planting and laying mulch now".

That was my first thought too

if this is a home that is getting work done this would not bother me. I could not care less about anyone elses business and the way i see it, I'd just be happy you were working on bringing curb appeal and property value UP even if it meant temporarily having an eyesore. I'm just a very laid back person though. too many issues of my own to worry about anybody elses unless it affects me.

Rude neighbor or justified?

myself personally i wouldnt care, but i could see how people would be offended. I think they should of spoken to one of you rather than leave a sign, and i def do not think it should of been in the road that long.

The pile is on the curb in front of our house.

This was the problem. Anything on the curb is considered up for grabs. I pulled the garbage out to the curb on the wrong day and I had the town inform me to roll it back to my house. The curb is considered public property really so I do think it should have been removed from there after that long or be placed somewhere on your driveway.

Rude neighbor or justified?

If we're going to get a truckload for a big job, we put it in the driveway. Tarp underneath, they dump it on the tarp, and then we put a tarp on top of it.

If we knew that we were only going to be able to do a little bit every Sunday for a few months, we would just go buy small bags at Home Depot every Saturday/Sunday so that there is less mess.

But if it's yours, it should not be in the street, kwim? Therefore anyone can take it. I think the person who put the note was basically trying to give you the hint to move it to your property since it's yours but yet, it's in the street where garbage or free stuff goes.

I think the sign is ballsy, and funny. I think it is really unreasonable for you to expect to be able to leave your stuff out on public property for such a long period of time and not have anyone say anything. I would be totally annoyed if my neighbor left a big dirt pile on the street for months. I think you should get it out of the street if you don't want people touching it.

The only time I see mulch curbside is when landscapers have it delivered and move/use it the same day. I've never seen it left in the street overnight. I would think that would be a hazard for drivers.

I think you were wrong. Yeah your neighbors were passive aggressive, but you should have moved the mulch within a day or two. Honestly, how long does it take to mulch? I have done my own house and it takes a day or two at best. And my husband did not help me. I moved those huge bags myself. Why didn't you help your husband if it was taking him so long and he was so tired? If your property is that large that it would take one person two months to do it, you should have either hired a gardener or gotten the mulch after you did the work you did. Leaving a pile of mulch festering for two months is not a great way to start a relationship with the neighbors at all.

I'm sorry but I think you guys are being a little rude leaving the mulch on the street like that. I know it's hard but you guys should have either paid someone to spread it or buy smaller bags at homedepot or something. Even if it were only a few weeks it would be bad but almost 2 months is pretty rude.

This does negate or make it acceptable for you to leave mulch for that long in the street.

Shovel it onto your front lawn so it's off the street.

Rude neighbor or justified?

rude for them to put a sign on it for sure...maybe your husband can shovel it into a garbage pail or wheel barrow and put it up near your garage or something so its not in the road anymore and then he can take all the time he wants spreading it out

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

while I don't think it was right for your neighbor to put up the sign, I most definitely don't think it was right to leave mulch in the street for over a month. I get that your DH has been exhausted but you do what you have to do. Last year, we had a ton of dirt and mulch delivered that took up our whole driveway but we busted our asses to get it done within a couple of days because we felt bad having our cars in the street for our neighbors to stare at. Like I said, I don't think the sign should have been left but someone just got frustrated I guess, and I feel like sometimes when you're new to a neighborhood, people get territorial

Yes, it is a hazard, as stated in my previous post. I see the landscapers dump it and leave it in the road all the time around here. Most don't leave it there for a month, or even a week though!
