Re: Costa Rica
i went 1.5 years ago and loved it! i booked with http://www.waytogocostarica.com/
we started our trip by flying into san juan and staying at El Silencio. Then we went and stayed at Tabacon and ended in Punta Islita ad flew out of Liberia.
El Silencio - the resort was nice, but no tv or internet or anything. its a total escape from the day to day life and there isnt much to do. we did white water rafting and that was pretty much it. the food is included and it was delicious! if you want to start down there maybe try the cloud forest or another area
Tabacon was beautiful - they were in the midst of renovations though but the rooms were nice and it was a great place to stay because the hot spring admission is included in your price. we did a ton of excursions while we were here (zip lining, waterfall repelling, and an eco tour). food options tat the hotel were very limited - 1 restaurant (but this may have changed with the renovations).
Punta Islita - beautiful and relaxing. a very small hotel where you have your own villa basically. nothing to do here either though except hang out on the beach or in the infinity pool. we did horseback riding through the hotel and also deep sea fishing while we were there. if you want to do surfing and stay at more of a "busy area" - i hear tamarindo is a great place.
feel free to FM if you have any other questions
enjoy!!

Re: Costa Rica
We rented a car and travelled around:
We stayed at Los Altos de Eros: A small inn near Tammarindo. Amazing communal meals, small rooms, great atmosphere, totally recommend.
The Springs in Arenal: Loved it, huge hotel, gorgeous rooms, great activities, nice staff, good food.
Punta Islita: Larger resort, stayed in a casita with a private plunge pool. Rented a golf cart, the beach was ok, food was ehh and expensive, but your only option because it was really secluded. Didn't love that the infinity pool area was off the main restaurant and that the other pool was filled with kids (it was our honeymoon). Wouldn't stay again.
