Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?

Just curious to see where people are going. I had a few friends move to Colorado, Tampa and South Carolina. They all seem to like it.

My friends have gone to North Carolina. My clients all seem to move to Florida when their cases are over. I need a Florida satellite office so I can get their word of mouth business (I can practice my profession there.)

Re: Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?

I would move to a cheaper area of the five boroughs. My neighborhood is by no means an expensive place to live, but there are less expensive areas, for sure.

It would take a lot for me to move out of NYC.

ETA: those that I know who have moved away have mostly moved to FL and GA. Those are great places to visit, but DH and I can't see ourselves living there. We're CF by choice, so factoring in kids and the decisions/expenses that come with kids isn't in the cards for us.

Re: Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?

I am originally from the Hudson Valley, which is a great area, but I know it's even tougher to find a "professional" job.

I already don't make a ton of money (human services) and I know that the people who reside Upstate that work for my agency start at about 1/2 of what I'm making.

It seems like a lot of people move up there with these intentions of commuting to work, and then it gets to be too much.

There are so many new, big, gorgeous homes in my parent's town that sit empty and vacant and I am sure that has a lot to do with it.

My sister is younger than me and her and a lot of her friends (all college grads BTW) seem to work odd jobs, or entry-level jobs to make ends meet.

It may not be AS bad if you are say, Lower Orange County (Monroe, Harriman) but the further North/West you go, the worse it seems to get.

My cousin is also a college grad in the health care field and has had a tough time finding employment up there.

My BFF moved about 30-40 minutes outside of Richmond with her company that relocated from NYC. She's a SAHM now, but her DH works in construction and it's really tough. He has to work many hours from home, and only comes home on weekends.

She has no family there either to boot.

She liked it originally, but I'm not sure about now.

I just moved to Northern VA...only because that's where I could get the job I wanted...it seems just as freaking expensive as NY though Chat Icon although my car insurance dropped $260.

We used to be required to go to Florida but now I think we can go to the Carolinas, PA & Georgia.

We moved to Chesapeake VA. About 30 mins from Virgina Beach ocean front. I don't like it here but DH does.

With rising airfare...NC is more popular then FL. An easy drive home...vs a FL to NY drive

NC is probably a more popular relocation destination for NY'ers than others. Areas near Raleigh or Charlotte, from what I have heard. I would love to relocate there myself but DH would never agree... I like the fact that as the PP mentioned that its drive-able back to NY.

I also have a cousin who relocated to the Houston area. He loves it there and said he is a lot better off financially.

I also love Myrtle Beach, SC but I don't think there are as many job opportunities there as there is living near a big city.

All of our relocated family is in the RTP area of NC Cary/Apex. We love it there but I wouldn't relocate unless my parents/brother go too! We do dream of lower taxes everyday.
