Our ped goes above and beyond. I sent a pretty nice gift a few days before Hanukkah. I didn't expect like a poem on handmade paper to say thanks but I thought he would at least drop an email/fb. The package was signed for but of course now I think maybe the company neglected to send the gift note? Or is it normal to be thanked at our next visit? If he doesn't say anything, is it appropriate to mention it?

You shouldn't expect ANYTHING. Send a gift because you want to, not because you EXPECT a thank you. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd call the office and ask a staff member if it was received. Its already what? A week and a half later?

Yes. But apparently it's protocol to not acknowledge gifts/thoughtfulness.

I doubt you'll get a thank you. for those types of gifts, people don't usually send any acknowledgement of receiving them.

Ehh, I don't know. I worked in a pediatricians office all through high school and college and during the holidays people sent stuff in all the time and I don't think it was ever acknowledged. This is one of the crazier times in a peds office, so many kids are sick, that I doubt they are going to have time to respond.

I'm not saying it's right AT ALL, but I'm just saying in my experience I wouldn't expect anything. For this exact reason, I try to drop stuff off in person if I want to bring a gift to a dr's office.

Re: What response would you expect from holiday gift to ped

i wouldnt expect a thank you in the mail, but probably at the next visit if they mentioned something would be nice.

when DS was first born and we had some issues and at the PED like every other day..lol. I wrote her/staff a nice note thanking them for their kindness etc. being first time parents it was a bit hairy for us.
she mentioned it to me at our next visit b/c she said they almost never get thank you notes :(

I guess it depends on the gift... if it was something personal (i.e. gift card, clothing, etc), maybe. If it's something he would share with the office, or his family, like wine or chocolates, I wouldn't expect a thank you note.

I'm sorry, but IMO it's common courtesy to send a thank you. I would definitely call to see if it was received.

No, not a note but maybe a phone call. "Hey, thanks for thinking of us and sending a fruit basket!"

What response would you expect from holiday gift to ped

I work in law firm and in my department, our clients are medical providers. We sent out gift baskets last week. One of our clients is literally across the hall. I mean, I can see straight into their office from my desk. They haven't said a thing and we're literally 20 feet from them. We did get a thank you card from one and a call from another but that's it.

Yes, this is what I thought- or a two second email/ fb message, but definitely did not expect a note.

I'm actually glad though that many people wouldn't expect any thank you bc it means I'm probably off base about him not receiving the gift or a mix-up with the gift note.

For me, I would 100% acknowledge something like that to at least just let the person know the gift they sent was received.

And yes, it is also a possibility that they are just very busy.

What response would you expect from holiday gift to ped

I worked in a Dr's office for years. We always said thank you and the Dr's would usually come out to thank them as well. They never sent a thank you! I gave my ped a small gift just to have for himself and his staff but I forgot to even put a card with it, his office manager thanked me. He probably won't even know it came for us.

I wouldn't expect anything, really.

I waited on hold for 10 minutes for my ped yesterday because they were so backed up. When I called back my call looped through the voicemail system twice before anyone could pick up. Based on my own ped, I really don't see how they have time to write thank you notes.

so you do have signed conformation that it was received?

i would do nothing.

if they send a thank you, awesome. if not ... im sure thank yous are not the first thing on their mind during flu/illness season Chat Icon I wouldnt be surprised if there is a note in your chart to thank you at your next visit.

It should not matter if its a busy doctor. We are all busy.

Writing a thank you note takes seconds.

Ditto. I don't ever expect a thank you for a gift I give to say "thank you" to someone - like the teacher gifts, gifts to the bus driver, etc. It's nice to receive them, but I never expect it.

If you got confirmation that it was delivered, then you know they got it.

I guess I'm thinking of it differently bc it was mailed. I was imagining more of a quick, "got the gift, thanks so much" type email. I never expected an actual mailed thank you card. I guess I'm just nuts, lol. We have a well visit after the new year, so we shall see. For those of you curious, it was a really nice basket of wine and cheeses. I know he and his wife are into wine so I researched a fancy basket that comes with cheeses in dry ice.

My ped sent an email that night. Why wouldn't they say thank you? I think it's rude not to send a note, email, etc. Especially if you do t have a visit coming up soon.

I am a teacher and I always write thank yous for gifts bc I don't get to see parents to say it to them. Most of the time saying thank you for holiday presents is good enoug, but if a gift is sent or the person isn't present I would call, write, etc to acknowledge it.
