Clogged tear duct procedure...

Anyone have experience with this..

My dd is 8 mo old and has had this since birth..her ped waited to see if it would clear up by now..but since it hasn't he wants me to see a ophthalmologist to see what he says!

My poor baby...whether big or small I don't want my lil peanut to have a procedure! Chat Icon

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

Let me preface this by saying I realize I sound like a lunatic. Are you breastfeeding, by any chance? My DS had a clogged tear duct when he was born, & my cousin kept telling me to squirt a little breast milk in it. I refused because it sounded nuts & didn't even make sense to me. After a few months, I figured I had nothing to lose. It worked.

Good luck!

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

My DS had it done when he was around 18 months. We were in and out of the hospital in about 3 hrs. It was better literally right after the procedure was done.
We didn't bring him to the ophthalmologist until he was over 12 months though. I'd wait a few more months and see what happens.

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

Hi there not to start anything but dh and i were totally against anything this invasive for something that we deemed unnecessary... ds was 8 months went we went to see an opthomologist and then were told to return after a year the opthomologist said some kids take a little longer and he said he was in no pain there was no harm in waiting.... ds just turned 3 and are glad to report it cleared up on its own
i was told it is a simple procedure but our opthomologist did say that it is not 100% that it will be fixed and also dc will be completely sedated we just felt it was not an option for us to sedate out 18 month old for something that was not life theathening

I did the breastmilk in the eye and it worked. I had to do it a few times before it completely cleared up.

thanks ladies! I am definitely going to see if I can help it clear on it's own - I figure I have 2 months until her next check up at 10 months..and then we will see from there!

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

DS was referred to a pediatric opthomologist at 9 months. We were told if it didn't clear up by a year, he'd likely need surgery. I was shocked when 2-3 weeks before his 1st birthday, it finally cleared up. I wouldn't worry just yet. Hopefully it will clear up for your DD soon. Chat Icon

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

Unfortunately, DS had the procedure twice. Once at about 20 months and once at almost 3. The first time, it cleared up but not 100%. THe second time, it cleared up and hasn't come back and its been a year! We massaged his eye with warm compresses every single night from when he was a baby till 3 years old. It just produced more mucous. It always looked like he had pink eye and was so gross. Before we had the procedure, the doctor gave us som erithromyecin (sp)and drops to use as well. The opthamalogist wouldn't even entertain the idea of the procedure until 18 months and then at 18 months when it didn't clear, we scheduled the procedure.

Definitely keep massaging her eye. I did it about three tines a day with my dd and it cleared up in about a month. Good luck.

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

My DD is only almost 3 weeks old, but about a week and a half ago she also had a clogged tear duct, yellow/white gooky discharge, eye crusting over after naps/sleep..I massaged with a warm compress, cleaned it out religiously and then read about the breastmilk trick...I dont know if it was coincidental or not, but after 2 days of breastmilk applications it cleared up!

My brother had this at about 10 months old (he is in his 20's now). Even years ago, the procedure went fine and it worked.

Re: Clogged tear duct procedure...

My DD had a clogged tear duct, and at her 9 month appointment her pediatrician wanted her to see an opthamologist if it didn't clear up by 10 months. At 10 months, it hadn't cleared up so I made the appointment. I was so upset. It cleared up at about 10 and 1/2 months, so we never wound up even having to go to the appointment Chat Icon . Give it some time, and good luck!

Yes my son had it done just this past March--he turned 4 years old.

We have been going to an Ophthalmologist since he's been little and he keep saying to wait he'll grow out of it. My son also needed glasses--one of his eyes turns in, but the Dr. said if you don't see it all the time he doesn't need it yet!!

Finally we changed Drs. and now seeing Dr. Sylvia Kodsi and she is WONDERFUL!!! She examined my son and put this yellow eye drop in his eye and it showed with a special light how his tear duct was blocked and she noticed that he need the glasses and wrote a prescription that day!!

Also I have to say that my son needed to get it done 'cause the parents at his school were commenting to the teachers and director asking if my son had pink-eye, etc. I had to get a note my his ped. saying its not pink-eye he's not contagious.
