I think what people don't realize is- when it comes to toddlers, you will do ANYTHING as a parent to keep them from having a meltdown in a store.
Anything. I'd give my daughter a steak if it would keep her quiet! 
I realize that some people will do anything to keep a toddler from having a tantrum - including giving into them. I wasn't the one that did it. I said no, I meant no. If I said we'll get you something to have at home, they got it. They used to ask for things to have later & sometimes they got them, sometimes they didn't.
Everyone parents differently. None of us have the answers. I just think that if you start giving into them with food in stores, you're going to have the kid throwing a tantrum over not getting things on a regular basis. Your kid is training you to do their bidding. If it's become your thing you do, then change your thing you do. Tell them your new rule is no eating in the store but have them pick out something for when they get out.
or don't.

Which grocery store was this? I have never seen pay by the pound cookies? Did you see ny55angel and thought they were pay by the pound ?

I just have to laugh at how serious people are about this topic. Even to go so far as to criticize other people's parenting skills for letting their child eat in the store. Who freaking cares as long as they pay for it. There are bigger fish to fry in the world of parenting!

I don't have kids so my opinion might not count- but as a fellow shopper if a bananna will keep your child from screaming- I will pay for it :)
I seriously can't believe that people care about this stuff- I would never assume the mother wasn't paying for it- I have drank water or something while shopping- I always pay for it
or I will eat a 100 calorie pack of nuts in target- and buy the box-

I can't believe people care about this stuff. I seriously do not notice what others round me are doing if it does not interfere with me. You want to eat an entire bunch of bananas? Go for it! I can guarantee you I will not sit around thinking about whether or not you paid for it!
Truthfully, I do not care. Yesterday, at target, I gave each of my kids goldfish to eat. Not because I am a bad parent and they did not even ask but I honestly just wanted them to be silent for 20 minutes while I shopped. I paid for them at the end and I cannot imagine what impact it could possibly have on others to make them care even a little bit.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Everyone keeps brushing such broad strokes here. There are ALWAYS details about a person's situation that are unknown. Because I give my kid a banana in the supermarket you assume I can't say no to my kid? That is just so judgemental (not to mention beyond off base).

I agree- and I also do it as a preventative measure.
I don't want her to start acting up, trying to get out of the cart, running around the store- so I distract her with a food item.
It works.
So rather than giving into the tantrum I am actually trying to proactively prevent it!

I did that once with my daughter when she was in a banana eating phase. I just asked the cashier to weigh another banana again to make up for it.

Eaxactly! For me its not about giving in to my toddler to prevent/stop a tantrum... I honestly dont see anything wrong with giving your kid something in the supermarket, especially if you plan on paying for it. However I would have no problem giving them something to calm them down either.
To each is own I guess. There seem to be a lot of people on high horses when it comes to parenting styles... there is no one size fits all parenting, especillay when you are dealing with toddlers.. what works for many, works for none.

I was in stop and shop yesterday with DS. We were almost finished and he spots cookies in the bakery area (the ones made by them, packaged and priced already in their plastic containers) I take a container off the shelf with FULL intentions of buying it and start to walk away. DS wants a cookie so I stop, maybe 2-3 aisles away open the container and give him a cookie. As I am closing it some random woman goes "I hope you plan in paying for that cookie!" I said "did you not see me put the package back into my cart to buy it" and she says "but its missing a cookie, make sure you tell them so they charge you for it" I told her to MYOB and walked away.
I felt like saying.....Ummmmm, hello dumb ass, they're prepackaged and pre priced. I could eat all of them and it is still going to be the same price!!
What an asshole she was.
This is why I do almost all my shopping at trader joes.
Everyone who shops and works there is so nice
Mine has a little cafe you can sample items, they give the kids stickers at the register, always offer to help carry out my bags, ask how my day is going. The customers are just as nice. I've had nice conversations with people where either Im reccomending something or they are.
It's just such a nice atmosphere and I always leave in a great mood. I think it attracts nicer, non judgemental peaceful people, both as customers and employees.
Also no one texts at the register. Or complains about their job.
Right??? They are awesome!!! I love TJs

Shoprite. Being that they are pay by the lb it is very tempting, especially the rainbow cookies!!

Who cares is the kid eats the banana in the store? Who cares if the Mother pays for it?

I used to do this when my DD was a toddler. I would save the peel and bring it up to the cashier (and he/she would either weigh the peel or an extra banana). I was NOT stealing, and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. I paid for the item before I left the store.
my mom used to do this for my sister all the time with apples. she just brought an extra apple with her to scan and weigh to pay for it

I'm not criticizing anyone's parenting nor am I on a high horse about my parenting. I'm sure I'm screwing up my kids as much as everyone else.
Maybe I misunderstood when the poster wrote she'd do anything to prevent a tantrum, that she meant she do anything to prevent a tantrum including giving the toddler anything they wanted to eat in the store.
I think there is a time and place for everything. I don't think people should eat in supermarkets unless there are samples out. As I said I think it makes it awkward for the employees because they don't know if you are stealing or paying. I've seen opened cartons put back on displays plenty of times. Of course no one on this board would do that, but plenty of people do. I don't get why people can't wait until they leave the store to eat.

I agree overall -
BUT- the OP asked for everyone's opinion on this topic, so i think it's only natural that people will reply. I don't think any of us are "worrying" about it - just responding to the OP.
I never get why people respond to these types of OPINION threads with "who cares" or "why would anyone worry about this, there are bigger problems in the world" - of course that's true - but it was an opinion question that was posed!

I hate that! I notice that all the time in Stop and Shop near my house. Even if its a pack of cookies wait until you pay for it and exit the store. One of my biggest pet peeves.
