pneumonia in an infant?

Dylan (4 months old) has a really bad cough. RSV came back negative. Whooping cough came back negative.

But i'm worried. I don't think it's normal.
He'll have coughing fits where he coughs like 10 times in a row, chokes or sometimes gags and spits up his bottles.

We brought him to the ped on wednesday. SHe seemed to think it was just a cold. But his cough is so bad and it doesn't seem to be getting better. He started with the cough on tuesday out of nowhere.

Last night and today he doesn't seem to want to eat much at all. He's irritable, not his smiley self and i'm just worried. He's lost his voice from all the coughing. After the coughin fits, he starts crying in pain.

The past week he's had temps that range from 99-100, but nothing higher.

If your baby had pneumonia, what signs were there?

Re: pneumonia in an infant?

I haven't experienced this myself but my BFF did with her son. The PED kept saying it was just a cold but eventually she went with her gut and took him to urgent care. Turned out to be pneumonia and they had to admit him to the hospital. He's a happy and healthy 17m old now but it was a scary couple of weeks. My only advice is to trust your mommy instinct and if you think it's something more serious, get a second opinion and don't wait too long. Better safe than sorry. Hope your LO feels better soon! I'd go to urgent care or hospital. But IMO he'd have a high fever with pneumonia

Re: pneumonia in an infant?

He would not necessarily have a fever with pneumonia. If he is not acting normal, I would bring him Back to the ped or urgent care. Did the ped do a cbc? Listen to his lungs?

My dd had a fever and had a decreased appetite. She was still walking around and playful. The Dr didn't hear anything in her lungs but her cbc showedher Abc becomingb more elevated so he sent her for an dray and sure enough she had a pneumonia. The cbc is very important with a cough.

Re: pneumonia in an infant?

well we ended up bringing him in to see his ped. She listened to his lungs and all that. He was wheezing so she started him on pulmicort and albuteral.

So in the mean time i guess we'll keep a close eye on it. She did another whooping cough test even though the 1st came back negative.
