Pre-K Registration Blood lead Level Test?????
I just received a pre-k registration packet in the mail that requires a lot of documents to be filled out. One of which is a blood lead level test- Is this mandatory to begin school?
My concern is first getting blood from a three year old (not going to be fun) and also the documents are required to be completed by registration time which is less than 2 weeks away. ( seems a bit unreasonable to me- just got them today)
It is clear that they will not register the children without all the documents.
There is also a dental form and we did not take DS yet. Our ped said to take him at 4, which is next month.
Anyway, can they deny a child registration in a public school pre-k program without having blood tests or a dental exam?
Out of curiosity, what is the law on this- I know some parents opt out of vaccinations- what happens then? Can I opt out of the blood test for now?

No, I didn't need that to register my DD for pre-k. We got a form for the dentist when my we registered my DD for Kindergarten but it was not required. It was just if we had taken DD to fill it out.

I know NY Dept of Health requires that health care providers test for lead levels in children at age 1 .
I know my girlfriends just mentioned yesterday that she needs to take her 5 year old for it because she never got it. She is registering him for kindergarten this coming fall. So I assume its because the school is requesting it.

For K the form said the dentist exam was recommended, but not required, but my GF says her district said the dentist exam was mandatory. Not sure if a district can supersede the NYS requirement? Dental exam definitely not a NYS requirement.
Lead test is a NYS requirement, but most people have it done way before, usually at age 1 or so.

I am actually confused. I thought it was standard practice for your ped to test lead level at around 1. Liam has had blood taken before. It's really not a big deal. He thought it was kind of cool. They just do a finger prick.
As far as the dental. I don't know if they can require that.

I was told it was a state requirement to have them tested at 1 (which we did).

My ped doesn't take blood...any blood test requires going to the blood lab.

Both my kids had the lead test at 1 and 2. It's really not a big deal--I gave them a lollipop and it was over in 30 seconds. We had to go to a lab.
One of my closest friend's daughters learned at the 1 year old test that her daughter had a SIGNIFICANTLY high lead level. Turns out it was from paint in her 1920's house's kitchen. It was a huge deal--thank god she found out. I guess I don't understand why you'd want to "opt out"--it's for your child's safety!
We started the dentist at 1.5 since my ped said to go by 2--I tried to make it a positive experience and now they love it since they get a new toothbrush!   Is there a reason your ped wanted to wait until 4? I'd be scared of cavities!
I'm not being judgmental--just honestly curious!

Besides lead paint- is there anything else that would cause elevated lead levels?
My house was built way after lead paint was banned so I know there is none there- plus she isn't one to go sucking on a molding or eating random paint chips or anything anyway!
I just couldn't bring myself to hold her down while they stuck a needle in her chubby little arm.
The thought sickened me.
Now if she was sick, or something serious was suspected, then of course I'd do it. I'm just very leery of unnecessary tests...esp on babies.

The issue with the 1yr blood work is that it is more than lead. Yes, lead issues nowadays aren't that common, but other issues can be detected, the most common being anemia. Untreated anemia has the potential to be very serious.
Honestly, the one year blood work is not a big deal. It took me longer to park at Good Sam than the actual appointment took.

I am also leary of unnecessary testing, plus I have a small (less than two week) window to accomplish this which is why I was wondering if I could opt out for right now. I will certainly discuss this with the ped again.
I remember having a conversation with the ped. about blood work at the one year visit. She asked us a few questions and said the blood work was not necessary to do at that time.
Thank you for the helpful responses. I would still be interested to hear if anyone refused and was able to attend public school. Can kids attend without receiving vaccinations? We have gotten DS all of them as scheduled but this issue makes me wonder..... Can they force you do medical interventions that you are not comfortable with? Which ones and why? What does the law say?

Eta- the little girl in the post didnt eat paint chips and had elevated levels. U never know...

They test for more than just lead. They do a CBC to check their blood counts. IMO its important to have done.
