My dogs killed something in the backyard
I know they're animals with killer instincts but this made me really sad. There was a family of something in our backyard, my husband isn't sure if they were field mice or another small type of rodent. Last night he went to call the dogs in and one of them had something in his mouth which isn't uncommon. He refused to drop it and then when he got closer my husband saw it was alive and squeeling  He went out there this morning and saw a little bed or something of lint I guess they were nesting there? Anyway my dog went right over there this morning to try and hurt them again. At this point I'm scared to let them out in the yard. I'm going to take them on walks but one of the dogs won't poop on a leash and that's really only a short term fix to the problem.

I am surprised these animals are nesting in your yard, knowing your dogs live there. Very odd.
What kind of yard do you have? Is there a lot of leaf litter? Brush, etc? If you can minimize that, you can minimize animals that want to nest in your yard.
You can't blame your dogs (you know that). I find it odd these animals are picking a place that the dogs can get to them. Also I assume you have your dogs on a tick control med but mice and rodents carry ticks, which your dog can pick up if he is picking them up.

What kind of yard do you have? Is there a lot of leaf litter? Brush, etc? If you can minimize that, you can minimize animals that want to nest in your yard.

We just moved here last month so maybe the animals had their nest there from before we came? That doesn't make much sense since the people that lived here before us also had a dog. The dogs are on frontline so hopefully that'll protect them against whatever fleas/ticks the mice may have carried. Thanks for your response. We're going to call a company to come clean up the yard, there is a lot of leaf litter.

Oh I see.
The leaf litter is the worst at attracting mice and rodents. My DD got a tick last MARCH from all the leaf litter in our new home's yard. Since then we had a landscaper overhaul the yard, remove overly large shrubs that animals might nest in and always pick up leaves. That way, I can be sure there is nothing nesting in my yard that my dogs might come across and I hope to minimize ticks like this too. The more direct sunlight in your yard, the less rodents will want to nest esp during daytime hrs, so they will find a new place.
Before we send our dogs out, we always check the yard, even at night, with a flashlight.I dont want them having a one on one with a raccoon (they can carry rabies) or even stray cats, kwim?
As for small animals, I assume the previous owner maybe did not let their dog back there or maybe the dog was old and didnt go to that spot in the yard. If you keep your yard clean and clear, you really should not have a problem with animals nesting. They like to be covered, private and safe, kwim?
Try to get a look to see what it is that is nesting and see if you can somehow discourage them to move along and nest elsewhere.
