Re: Women who went into preterm labor..

Got exctited to see a post that I may be able to help with but I cannot. I would actually like to see the replies you get.

DS#2 is actually still in NICU, born at 29 weeks 2/6/12. Tomorrow he will be 5 weeks old, 34 gestation and should be home in a week or two.

My water did not break but I went into preterm labor and my cervix was completely dilated with 24 hours. OB broke my sack just as he was coming out. They sent my placenta out for testing. I did not receive a call so assuming nothing came back. My follow visit is next week so I will inquire as to what could have happened and what the plan will be should there be a #3.

Good luck to you! Chat Icon

Re: Women who went into preterm labor..

I can't speak from experience (although so far this pregnancy is better) but I have the same worries right now.

I was on bedrest at 24 weeks because of a short cervix and ended up having my twins at 30 weeks. This time, even though it's only 1 baby, Im still nervous that Im going to go early again. I was very nervous for my 24 weeks check up bc thats when everything started going downhill last time. But everything was fine and I'll be 28 weeks tomorrow and no signs of anything yet (Im already on weekly visits bc of my previous preterm labor).

I guess worrying isnt going to help at all and the only thing I can do is wait and see how far I go.

I am a perfect example of what you are describing! Chat Icon And NOT to worry: it is not a guarantee that the whole scenario will repeat itself.

With my first, my water broke at 36 weeks and I delivered exactly 12 hours later.

With my second, after being slightly effeced and dilated for about 10 days, I went into labor at 38 weeks, my water never broke and my OBGYN had to break it on the birthing table while I was already in super active labor. So, there! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Women who went into preterm labor..

I went 6 weeks early with my first (water broke & then went into full labor) & only a week early with my second (water broke after delivering).

Out of my other friends who had preemies, 3 under 30 weeks, 2 others under 34 weeks, we all went early with our first & full-term with our second.

Only one of my friend's sisters had 2 preemies (28 weeker & 33 weeker). She had a heart-shaped uterus which supposedly contributed to the early delivery.

Another friend was in pre-term labor with both of her girls but with the help of drugs & inversion, she held on until 33 weeks.

Not sure if this helps you, but my ob told me after I delivered my 1st that I had only a 15% change of delivering preterm again. On the other hand, after my second was delivered in 7 minutes, he said 2/3 chance of delivering a baby outside of the hospital if we opted for #3. I guess it depends on the reasons for preterm.

Re: Women who went into preterm labor..

I went into preterm labor with my 1st and delivered her at just under 33 weeks. While I can't answer your question just yet (I'm currently pregnant with number 2), this was definitely one of my biggest fears about getting pregnant again. My DD is now 2 and they never were able to figure out why she came so early. And while the risk is higher once you have a previous preterm labor/delivery, the one good thing is that now I have been monitored a lot more closely and I definitely do not ignore any 'symptoms', no matter how little they may seem. Also, based on my history I was considered a good candidate for progesterone injections (17p) which have been showm to reduce the risk of preterm labor in some women so I have been receiving those since 16 weeks. I am hoping and praying I can make it to full term this time, which is just a short few weeks (although sometimes it feels like an eternity) away Chat Icon.

Re: Women who went into preterm labor..

I had DS at 36 weeks 2 days. Water broke completely unexpectedly!

When I got pregnant with DD just over a year later the dr. prescribed weekly injections of 17P from week 20 - week 36. It is a form of progesterone to keep the uterus calm.

Must have worked for me because DD was 5 days late!
