Why Long Island should care about Fracking

Many of you know that I live in Colorado. I am fighting a battle on the actual "fracking" happening here in my town.
Long Islanders please educate your self on the dangers of what they want to drive on your roads with. The potentials dangers should their be a spill (and believe me, THEY happen). Feel free to ask me any questions I am happy to answer. I am still new at this fight but I have been doing my homework non stop.

Stop Fracking

I am not super well versed on what it going on in NY but I believe NY residents have until January 11th to contact and speak out to Governor Cuomo.

Re: Why Long Island should care about Fracking

Thank you for posting. I am so disturbed about the possibility of fracking here, and the fact that it's happening anywhere. I recommend watching the movie "Gasland" to see how dangerous it is.

I just submitted a comment on line to the DEC. Follow the instructions below from the Riverkeeper.org site. I used the general comments category to file mine.It just took about five minutes to do:

Submit your comments online: If you prefer to comment online, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/energy/76838.html.

When you get to the DEC’s comment page, you will notice the agency has three proposals open for comment. It’s most important to comment on the revised draft environmental impact statement (listed as “2011 rdSGEIS”). If you have time, also comment on the proposed regulations (listed as “Proposed HVHF Regulations”).

Submitting your comments to the DEC online is a multi-step process, so please follow the directions to guarantee the DEC hears from you. You’ll be asked to input your name and other personal information. We recommend that you don’t identify yourself as affiliated with Riverkeeper or any other group unless you’re a staff member; comments made by affiliates of an organization may be grouped together, rather than counted separately. You’ll be asked to select one of 25 categories for your comments. If in doubt, choose “General Comments on the 2011 Revisions.” If you have comments that fall into several categories, you can submit them one at a time. For further information or assistance with you can contact the DEC’s Bureau of Public Outreach by email at [email protected] or by calling 518-402-8044.

Just saw this the other day

Ohio, Oklahoma quakes linked to fracking

Makes one wonder if fracking in NYS would lead to more quakes around here too.

Re: Why Long Island should care about Fracking

Ummm sorry but my geeky mind went STRAIGHT to Battlestar Galatica where 'frak' or 'fracking' means ummm the other f word.

interesting read tho.
One of the links above basically said the liquids are bad, spill would be really bad but the exhause on the diesel of the transport is really immediately the concern? Chat Icon Did I read that right? Diesel exhaust is bad for us so lets stop *THIS* action. How about all?

Re: Why Long Island should care about Fracking

My husband worked in the oil fields in (Rock Springs) Wyoming. It really is as dire as they make out. Sour wells, (so toxic that you have to wear gas masks while working on the site) tankers of liquid nitrogen.

These companies are really like locusts, hundreds of people (frackers, coil tubers, truck drivers, engineers) coming into towns, using up all the town resources (only takes a few years). Lots of drug (meth) use was common, to work the long hours. The towns have to build new roads, schools, houses, businesses to accommodate the influx of a large population with lots of disposable income. Then when the fracking is done, and the pumps are set up, they all just leave. Leaving behind a huge mess and and undesirable population (usually workers who got caught for drugs and lost their jobs). Many make money in the town, and send it back home, not reinvesting in local economy. Lots of these employees are very transient. Most of the people we met while in Wyoming were from other places, that the frackers had moved on from like Louisiana. They have since moved on to Homer City Pa, and North Dakota. (Google North Dakota oil boom for some interesting reads)
Yes there is a BIG influx of money, but the cost in the long run is much higher. What it does to the environment is scarier than what it does to the economy.

Timing being everything, those who care about this issue as it relates to our state ought to use the link to the NY State DEC - which I posted a few posts above this one - to register their objections to, or approval for fracking to be allowed in New York State . It just takes a few minutes.

Comments have to be registered by January 13th, after that is too late to be considered.

Better yet, we should be writing Gov. Cuomo, but any letter needs to get to him by Jan. 13th.
