My 8 year old nephew is very much into Legos!
Also, sporting equipment of any kind, video games (wii, DS, xBox, etc) and other building type toys.

Depends on the boy.
My older son would have loved (and still loves) Legos. My little one.. not so much.
My 8 year old is craving:
Army Men
Laser Stunt Car (and any other 'fast' remote control vehicle)
Nerf Disc shooter
Tactical Vest
iPad or laptop (HAA!! Like THAT will happen!)
The new Zelda for Wii
Board Games for our family game night
Art sets - especially clay, paper and tape.
