question about planning vacations and taking time off...wwyd

so, DH and i get about 4 wks a year, but we never take them ALL (b/c it just doesnt look good)

this year we have been talking about planning a trip to europe or south america and taking around 2 weeks

so far, we also are taking 1 day off in january for a wknd trip and 4 days off in march to go to turkey....so that is already 5 days by march.

now for the rest of the year, my parents would like us to go on a vacation with the family. since i am usually the one planning travelling, i have been looking at prices to see if we can even do it (with cost and days off as the biggest factor).

so the options are:

**a trip in may where we would take 4 days off.
**or a trip in november where we would take 7 days off.

both are around the same price, so there is a better "bang for your buck" in november, but im hesitant to take the additional days off.

so, if we do opt for the shorter may vacation, i am also concerned with work's POV, since we will be traveling january, march, MAY...and again in the summer? i know i shouldnt care what they think, but i do!....so is november better?

any advice? i still want to plan a trip to europe!!! but all these other trips seem to really be factoring into our plans too....arrrr

They are your days..I say use them how you feel! If you have the time then use them!

You are too good not using all your days...if you never use all your days, would it really be that bad to use them all this year!?!?!

I say do what you can while you still can!

thanks for the response. in 2010 i took all my days since we did a 3 wk honeymoon. i dont really want to max all my days again...well, until i have kids. then i will probably use them up. so in the meantime, i want to TRAVEL...but still look like a good employee

Why would it look bad to use up all your vacation days?? Thats what they are there for,,,if you use them all up in 1 shot, then yeah ppl at work may get annoyed but at my firm we also get 4 weeks of vacation and everyone uses it..2 weeks here, a week off in a few months, then another week off later, etc....as long as you do good work, it shouldnt matter...guess every employer is different.

I would choose the November trip..

I would probably do the May trip and plan something else for a few days with just your husband in the fall.

There is really no reason not to take your days. Using them does not make you a bad employee. But I hope you at least get to save up or get paid out for your unused vacation days.

Use all your vacation days. Your company gives them to you I don't see how taking them will make you look bad. They are part of your compensation package....so you are just cheating yourself out of part of your compensation

Seriously, use all your days! Personally I'd go on a trip in May and November if you can afford it. Now that I have a DS I'm so so thankful that I travelled so much before I had him. I used to get 22 vacation days per year and took every single one of them each year. If work didn't like it they could give less days or not approve my time, ya know?
