is my kid a giant?

every time someone asks how old DS is (and I respond) they are shocked and say how big he is for his age ... Chat Icon I don't see it. I feel like he is "average" or maybe a little bit above.

we just had his 18 month well visit and he is 27lbs and 34 inches.

we do have tall men on my side of the family so maybe he is just taking after them. is he really that big? Ped said he is perfect, following his own curve.

Well DS was 26lbs and 32" at his 18 month visit and I get it a lot too. I'm like Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I think it's people's perception. Some kids "look" older even though they're pretty much on target. DS is 75% for height so I imagine your DS is slightly more. My ped said DS is the size of a 2 year old at 19 months so I guess he technically IS above average and so would your DS be?

I go by his clothes - if he was 2 in 4t, he might be big. If he's 18 mos and in 2t, he's where he should be.

DS wears his age!

Your son is not a giant at all. My Ds on the other hand is a big boy. At his 13 month visit he was 27 lb 4 oz and 32 1/4" long. He is now 14 months and who knows how much he weights. He just looks alot older. Whenever i tell anyone he is 14 months they are surprised he isnt at least 18m - 2. He currently wears 2T clothing.

Re: is my kid a giant?

No he doesn't sound like a giant, but above average in size.

DS was 35'' and 29 lbs. at 18 months, so @ 100% for height and 90% weight.

However, DH is 6'8'' and I'm 6' so he should be a big boy!

Re: is my kid a giant?

I dont think he's a giant, he's just a little taller than average.

My DD was 34 inches and 25 lbs at her 15 month appointment. We know she's off the charts for height and taller than most of the kids we know.

Re: is my kid a giant?

my DS has always been off the charts for length, and much longer than that, so it doesn't seem long to me.

Re: is my kid a giant?

DS measured 35.5" at 18m.

I don't what you mean by "giant" ... its not unhealthy or anything. My doctor says the same thing, he's just following his curve. He's always been above the curve.

People are shocked because I'm only 5'1 .. and then say, "the father must be tall" I shrug and say he's about 5'8" lol ..

people are dumb ..

I don't even bother explaining that 2 of DS great grandfathers where over 6' and he probably just got lucky genes.

the dumbest people are the ones that then look at their own kid and wonder whats wrong with their kid... look around, there are short and tall people all around, why wouldn't there be tall and short babies.

Re: is my kid a giant?

He's not a giant! I get the same looks all the time.

DD is 35 inches and 33 lbs. I am told she's a beast. whatever, Dr says she's healthy...and the size of a small 4 year old. Chat Icon

Everyone has a comment to make! Not every child is the same.

And the Dr said that you really can't tell what that mean in the long run.. I was always a tall child...I'm 5 feet. Dh was always a bigger child too and he's 6 feet.

_______________________________

GoldenRod- thanks for posting the growth chart.

But the average height for 18 months is 32 inches. A boy who is 30 inches at 18 months is less than the 5th percentile- very small. The average weight for an 18 month old boy is about 26 lbs.

A boy at 18 months who is 34 inches is at the 90th%, so while he is not a "giant" he's taller than most kids his age.

ITA, there are some big kids that slow down once they hit teens. The best way to tell if a boy is going to be really tall is their feet. Typically feet grow way faster than the rest of a boy's, so if their feet are growing really fast then they will most likely be very tall. Hard to tell with toddlers but easier to tell when they are an older kid with giant feet Chat Icon

I get it too. Dd is 17 months, 24 lbs, don't know her height but is always in 90%. She is taller than the other kids we play with. She also is walking very well and was an early walkers so I think that's why. She seems more sturdy than the rest.

He doesn't seem like a giant. People are weird
