I personally don't think it's a cute video at all. I think it's sad that technology is replacing books and toys for many kids. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a huge influx of children needing OT for lack of fine motor skills in the future.
ITA! That's how I felt when I saw it.
Also, I wouldn't let my kid play with my I-Pad because it's EXPENSIVE.

My DD just turned 17 months. She sits on my lap will look at the ipad. I let her tap it to select items. But i dont let her hold it. She totally knows the difference between a book/magazine and an ipad. What i found unsettleing about the video is that the baby couldn't enjoy the magazine for what it was. My DD would have loved to look at pictures of people, look for pictures of babies and dogs, etc... And of course the experience of crumpleing up the pages and ripping them out. That would be typical. I think the video is reflective of the fact that that baby spends MORE time playing with an IPad than age appropriate books /toys.

I can see the message that they're trying to get across, but call me crazy; I don't think I would let my kid play with my iPad in the first place. She could be sending redicilous emails or transferring my money to Russia lol
Where are her toys??
Or BOOKS ... I guess they don't "work" either. 
My DS is 2 and has an iPad. He also has "real" books, toys, social experiences and everything else I think a child needs to learn. He knows the difference.
I see nothing wrong with a child having a tablet, it is a new kind of toy/teaching tool. If anything, I think my DS has an advantage having had early learning experiences with this new technology.

I believe everything in moderation. I laugh when I hear people say " Oh my child will never blah blah". Will my kid sit on a computer all day, absolutely not, will my kids only use an ipad instead of a reading a book, definitely not. Kids follow your lead set a good example and they will be fine.

I think everyone needs to relax a bit. I am pretty sure this is a loving family who has plenty of toys for their daughter. She will one day understand the difference between an IPad and a magazine and will be ok.

I'm torn. On the one hand- this is where we're headed. Kids are using computers in pre-k classes now. Technology such as Smartboards are replacing black/whiteboards in classrooms. On the other hand, I feel this amount of time spent plugged in is negatively impacting children's ability to communicate on a personal level.
An OT I work with shared with me that the brains of 3rd graders today have larger occipital lobes (vision center of the brain) than 3rd graders just 10 years ago. Coincidently, children with ADD/ADHD historically have tended to have larger occipital lobes.
The way that children learn is changing much faster than our educational system is.

Maybe it is just me but I don't see the connection in saying the baby is playing with the magazine as if it was an iPad. My son does the same thing to all his books whether they are the "touchy- feely" kind or not. That is what babies do.
In general too much of most things are bad. Too much on the iPad, too much secluded reading books a little bit is ok, you just have to set limits and be sure to expose them to other things (active and social things). We are alsO in a different generation, this is what the future holds for these kids, wait til they go into the career world!

My DD - who NEVER has seen or touched an IPAD- will do that to books and magazines too- kind of runs her finger over the page.
To me, that is what it looked like that baby was doing- just running her finger over the page to feel it.
At that age, that is what they do- touch and feel everything.
I wasn't impressed.

They are digital natives...we are the immigrants.
(Coming from a librarian) We need to find a balance and embrace the technology -it's here to stay and will only get ahead of us. If I don't embrace it, I will be out of a job. Our world and culture are ever evolving.

I agree--I think you could've shot this same video 10 years ago. This is just how babies learn/explore.
Maybe I'll change my mind when DD is older but I don't need her using a computer, iPad, or even childrens tablet at that age. I never had video games or a computer in my house growing up (until age 23!) and I'm no worse for it! She'll learn about technology when necessary. I don't want her knowing things I don't about computers and creeping around on the Internet at age 5!

Ok, I think its a bit of a stretch on the parents part with this video. The kid wasnt interested in the magazine, nor was she that swift with the ipad to make the connection. She just pointed at BOTH, i dont think she new the difference.
That said, my ds (3 in Jan) uses ours ALL THE TIME. He is more skilled than some adults with theirs. I have zero issues with it. This is the world we live in, technology is only going to improve over the years. Look at how far we have come in the last 15. He still reads real books, and plays with real toys, but also uses the ipad.

ITA! I'm a 1st grade teacher and there is such a tech push in our schools. "21st century learners" wil be doing things we never imagined at such young ages. This is the world we live in. It's not going away. I also have to say there are some amazing apps for kids. They can be awesome teaching tools. That being said they should absolutely not take the place of real books and toys. As I feel with just about everything. Balance and moderation

ITA, I think of our eyes too adjusting to all the screens we look at now, I'm going to guess more glasses/eye problems/etc
It's a double edged sword, they need to be familiar with technology at this point to survive, but our bodies really aren't completely adapted to all the screens/technology etc
