well, it didnt go as planned ...

Finished the Diva today. This event was so fun. I met a lot of great people and it was a well organized event. I felt great up to mile 7.5 and my calf started tightening. I stopped to stretch and continued on. At mile 8 I saw my husband, stopped to say hi then I was off, feeling great still. At mile 9 my calf muscle almost pulls. Thats it, I was done running. I couldnt run for more than a few seconds and it kept feeling like it was curling up into itself. SO, I walked the rest of the way.

At mile 6 I was at 1:15 ... I finished 3:17 Chat Icon

Im looking forward to my next half though. What a great feeling to cross the finish.

ETA: few pictures in my album :) Im in all black

CONGRATS!!! Great job!! You finished!! Even if it didn't go as planned, its such an accomplishment. I was just coming on this board to see if you posted about the Diva (and if not I planned on stalking you lol).

Re: well, it didnt go as planned ...

Don't be discouraged!!!! You did great! Esp since you had to walk for 4 miles!

And honestly, this was my 5th half and the most challenging course I have ever run. Flat courses are BORING and it was completely deserted between mile 8 and 13. And also when we ran on Charles Lindbergh blvd. And I was very discouraged when the mile markers were not placed at the appropriate distances and the clocks were malfunctioning...

OK I'll stop complaining now....

Seriously, be proud that you finished and now you have a goal for the next one!

I'm so proud of you! I have to say that I admire the people that finish marathons in 7 plus hours more than I admire those that come in first place. To be out there for such a long time and not give up is incredible.
You did amazing and I know how hard it is to just walk...but you never gave up and you did it!!
Congrats on completing your first half marathon!!!

Congrats on finishing! I know to not get the time you wanted can be disappointing but focus on the fact that you finished a half marathon, which is more then most people can say.

Thank you all so much.

Ugh, I hate the disappointed feeling just because Ive trained so hard for months for this and then to not be able to finish strong because of a calf muscle sucks. But, I am happy I finished and I'll be doing another one for sure

You did great, just by getting to the starting line! Your first is to complete, not compete!

Now I hope you are hooked and are ready for your next!!!

did you drink enough? fuel with sports drink or gel?

I thought I drank a ton of water leading up to the race and throughout and at mile 7 or 8 I ate sports beans. Ive never had calf pulls before so maybe I was dehrydated and didnt know. But yes .. Im looking forward to my next race.

Re: well, it didnt go as planned ...

I think at 9 miles its common to feel pain. I've heard stories abt the 9-10 mile mark, hitting the wall, and feeling the pain. I witnessed this running on Saturday. Many many people had to take a break, walk, or slow down at this point. I was feeling it too at that point. If my brother wasn't with me I wouldn't have been able to stay as strong. Don't dwell on it.

Focus on the fact, You completed a half marathon!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You might have drank too much water. That can actually flush all the nutrients from your body. I was told by a coach to just drink gatorade during the race and not water. I'll drink a bottle of water during the night, before a race. But that morning I sip gatorade during the 2 hours before.
There's so many factors that go into running and the way it affects us. This could just be one of many. I'm always learning something new and trying new techniques. Now you just have to plan the next one!! Chat Icon

You finished it!! Congrats! Do not worry---you did what you have to do, sometimes we just have good or bad days. Know that your next race is in reach--set a goal of breaking 3 hours! Seriously, a first marathon is tough but its good you want to do more!

Yay for finishing it!!
