Well you either don't know a lot of people are the people you know have connections that most don't. I know people who are unemployed and a lot more who are underemployed. Guess what there aren't jobs out there for everyone. The people you know were fortunate to get a job or lied to you because you probably look down on them for not getting a job.

I'm not all that versed on this protest but I just can't find their point of rallying on Wall Street from what I read. I think the problem stems the far reaches of Wall Street. We are on the verge of another global recession if we haven't already fallen into on. Europe is a mess and resonates around the world. Corporations are doing much better but are sitting on piles of cash because of Greece and all the really entails. We need leadership in this country. We need a reform that will prevent the political posturing that goes on. We need reform that will control the influence and power of lobbyist. I am much more disturbed by the obscene amount of money spent on political campaigns then I am by any public companies CEO/COO/CFO pay.

Guys - take time to learn about what's happened to our financial and political system. It's not working for nearly all of us. Republican, Democrat - it doesn't matter. They don't work for us. They haven't for a very long time.

This.

As far as the protests.. nope.. not giving them a moment of my attention. I prefer to pay attention to those with a singular message, goal and action plan. Otherwise its just folks screaming at the wind.

Not saying I don't agree with some of it. I disagree with some of it too. I've hit hard times and no one gave a rats hiney. I lived in NY when I have no family there to lean on, live with, or help me out. I know what its like to eat rice for days on end and wonder where you'd be sleeping that night. I've lived in my car and used a paper to wake up to use a shower. BTDT.

NO one was there for me. Not the government, not food stamps, not a protesting group.

It *IS* a class warfare. We are told to hate the free riding rich, but then told to dream that we or our children could be one. Chat Icon

This is a rough time for EVERYONE who's not rich beyond their wildest dreams. Everyone is losing something. Times are as carefree as they used to be and they really never were before much either.

Id rather just hunker down and stockpile my resources and hope to weather this storm instead of standing in the eye and screaming at the wind. Now you show me a way, show me a path, give me something solid not some flimsy idea of a possibility but an actual game plan, I may get up and pool my resources with you. Otherwise, all I can do is care for my small family.

JMHO.

I'm no saint. I use money stupidly. I'm going to disney with my kid. I send my kid to a private school. My mortgage is paid, my bills paid etc. I have medical bills I can't keep up with. I chose this path. Its my cross to bear. Not the government or my neighbor.

These protesters are burdening our police force and inconveniencing everyday people (closing down the Brooklyn bridge for example)

Why hate on people making top dollar because chances are the sacrificed and busted their asses to get there.

Instead if wandering the streets, these people should do the same.

As far as Verizon having tO pay 6 k a year for health, I have no sympathy. Dh pays over 800 a month and we have zero pension.

are you being serious here?? Or sarcastic?

Can I ask if you have a job and or DH and if you have or are struggling at all right now?

Dead serious. My mom works for Verizon and has made a ton of money with ot over her 30 year career. Single mom, sent my sister and i to private school etc. She has a tremendous pension that dh and I could never save in our
lifetime.

Dh was only paying 250 a month for health ins. His company merged and increased to 800 a month.

I'm not working I'm home with two babies. no we have Never struggled thank goodness. We have lived below our means and saved our pennies. Doesn't mean much in this economy though, things can change for the worst very quickly.

My mom is no longer in the union so she does not have as many benefits but still has the pension.

I just can't with our ideals anymore.

we are losing BILLIONS of dollars a year b/c these top earning companies AMERICAN companies DO NOT PAY taxes on their income earnings.

DO NOT PAY TAXES ON THEIR INCOME EARNINGS.

and they are NOT CREATING JOBS.

let's review...they get to keep ALL their money and they DO NOT create jobs.

we have an almost 10% unemployment rate. that is crazy high. while some people maybe be taking advantage (and if they are REPORT THEIR ASSES) there are MANY MANY MANY people who need those weekly checks to pay mortgages and buy food.

more and more of us "AMERICANS" party of the "GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH" are slipping below the POVERTY level.

that is astounding to me. ASTOUNDING.

the 1% DO NOT PAY their "FAIR SHARE"

it does not happen. it's scary to read how people somehow think they are set above b/c they saved their pennies.

one you have NO JOB, the pennies will dwindle. the pennies will dwindle.

we have zero industry. zero jobs. and are running out of money.

One of the principles this nation was built on:

No taxation without representation.

We, the 99% (aka,"the people"), are no longer represented.

The only ones represented are the 1% and corporations. Their lobbyists have the politicians in their back pocket.

Fix the tax structure, make corps and the 1% pay their fair share!
Fix political campaigning.
Rid Washington of paid lobbyists.
Abolish tax shelters.

These CEO's and corps are pocketing millions of dollars and abolishing US jobs and the US economy. How much manufacturing has been sent off to China? How many people here have lost jobs to India?

Our infrastructure is falling apart. Roadways, bridges, tunnels, schools etc in every part of this nation need repair or rebuilding but we can't get it done. And when it does get done, we import materials from other countries. Anyone want some stinky Chinese drywall?

ETA: And let's not forget some of these big corps got US taxpayer financed bailouts.

THANK you Jessica.

I saved my effing pennies. I lived WELL below our means. We OWN our two beat to hell used cars, we bought a small and affordable house, we don't do big vacations, we find bargains on EVERYTHING and we scraped and saved and had money.

And then I lost my job. The job I was never going to lose because I was there forever, helped build the company and was good at what I did. But I lost it. Gone.

And as the months drag on.. my savings go down. I have sent out over 280 resumes at last count. I get unemployment and we are BARELY, BARELY scraping by. At the rate we are going I will be out of savings (except for our retirement) by the beginning of 2012.

I seethe, I burn, I RAGE when people imply that the unemployed aren't trying hard enough. I all but gnash my teethe and rend my clothes when I hear people tsk, tsk from there pretty little perch. They don't have ANY EFFING CLUE how quickly it all can fall away and how fast that savings goes.

We - as a country - are on BORROWED TIME. Something needs to be done. Wearing a veil over your eyes doesn't make the problem go away.. it only makes you blind.

This...exactly this. Almost everyone pays for benefits now...it is what it is with health care costs on the rise.

But this is a PROBLEM. I cannot afford to go to the Dr. I have a few medical problems as does my DH and we cannot afford the co pays, deductibles and the cost we pay weekly for the insurance. If we cut down on any and all extras we could, but then we become depressed and lose a lot of quality of life. I dont think we should have to make that choice. there has to be some relief, somewhere...some compromise.

I wrote an insanely long reply that got lost because i got logged out again.

When I said I agreed with the PP I meant that they burdening the police force. They're also harassing my friends who work downtown and make no more than 75K. So they're really just taking it out on the wrong people.

Not all CEOs and COOs are born with silver spoons in their mouths. Alot of them work their way to the top and are happy to pay their share of taxes. They should be rallying and protesting in DC, not here. The tax law in this country needs restructuring--and while they're at it, they should weight it based on cost of living.

I'm sorry that people are hurting, I'm not blind to it. I see it all over. I just don't think protesting is going to help.

The costs of health care affect me too. I pay for my benefits and I still get a bill everytime I go to a dr. I pay them when they come and they're NOT cheap. Am I protesting at United Health Care? No, i'm at work so I can pay my bills.

There are also a ton of people who are collecting unemployment to milk the system--my brother being one of them..he is "too good" for every job out there..if my mother wasn't supporting him, he'd be homeless..and he would have to take something "beneath him". Hes been collecting unemployment for 2.5 years and Obama keeps extending it. Until he cuts him off, he will not work.

The people that I know that have been laid off and actually looked, and looked HARD for jobs have found something. I can honestly say that I don't know anyone who is unemployed right now...

Listen there are people who "milk" everything. But how DARE you claim that everyone who looks hard finds a job. Really??? Because I search every.single.day. I've barely gotten any responses back. I have a degree and have been working full time for 7 years. STILL CAN'T GET A JOB. You are highly insensitive to what is going on in the world. Not everyone is like your brother but probably due to him they will get stricter with unemployment benefits and so then i'll lose that then it will be really hard to pay the rent. You really need a wake up call!!!!

What an idiotic thing to say "everyone that looks for a job gets one". Really? Just bc you know some deadbeats that abuse the system does NOT mean that there are not people looking and HARD for jobs and unable to secure one.

I feel LUCKY that DH and I are both gainfully employed. I do not take it for granted in this climate and anyone who does is a fool.

Agreed.

DH has called, mailed, faxed, emailed and even gone and dropped resumes off to businesses.

I am grateful he still has a FT job and that he didn't quit or drop to PT to finish school. I'm grateful I have a FT job.

But I am very aware that all we have could be gone tomorrow.

Those of you looking, I hope you find something soon Chat Icon

I agree too.

I think that people who say things like that truly have no idea what it is like to be unemployed then. People who think that that others "milk" the system haven't lived that life, the penny to penny life (as for the poster who said her brother does b/c of their mother, well that is b/c that person is enabled to live like that!)

It took me one year and four months to find a job. In a field that hasn't really taken a terrible hit. I have friends who are finding NOTHING!Chat Icon

Those people DO donate.
When you make $20mil a picture, you have to pay your agents, accountants, attorneys and taxes. They don't actually take home all that money.

Look at who funded the Obama campaign. I'm sure McCain's list is public - and that you'll see some overlap from corporations like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs.

Wall Street IS the enemy.

Re: Why are there no posts on anything going on in Wall Street?

People are starting to take notice of the protestors. I understand that some unions plan to join them on Wednesday. The ones who started it may be a motley crew with mixed motives, but they are drawing attention to issues Washington has been scared to touch. Ones that desperately need attention.

It isn't just the increasingly obcene paychecks given top executives, the golden parachutes given to failed/fired execs or the tax breaks they get so that they pay less taxes in proportion to their incomes than we do. It's the lack of regulation and accountability in banking that brought on the financial crisis we are all living through. It's also the outsized influence corporate lobbyists have on politics in this country. Take a look at this op-ed piece from Sunday's Times:

A lot of us are hurting but it may not be readily apparent. I can't find a buyer for a house I am the executor of because of the bad market, so it's being foreclosed on and people I know are being laid off or can't find work for their skills (carpentry, painting, etc). Someone's dream house next door has come to a halt in the midst of being built, apparently they ran out of money. Times are tough.

I'm paying a relative's COBRA so she doesn't lose health coverage while she searches for a new job. She was let go from one she'd had 20+ years, in favor of part time workers who cost less and don't need to be given benefits. No one wants to hire her, probably because she's in her late 50's, doesn't have a college degree and isn't very computer literate - though she's learning, when they can hire an attractive young woman who's a whiz with computers. She's scared she will never find a job with benefits, which she needs due to a health condition.

And you wonder why people have nothing nice to say about LIF. What do you expect when it's an open forum for all opinions? Ladies no matter the subject let's try to respect each other. In all cases here.

I personally have money invested in stocks and my pension is in stocks. If you are bashing wallstreet and you have money in there (even life insurance policies) isn't that wrong?

The protesters want to shut the stock exchange down. If you are down there and talk to them that is what they will tell you. What you watch and read on the news is not accurate.

Wall Street IS the enemy.

This is one of the reasons our economy is in such trouble right now. This ignorant statement that so many bought into - so many that just don't understand how the financial system works. These same people were cheering when the gov't wouldn't bail out Lehman Bros and were being interviewed saying they got what they deserved - and, look what happened then. When will people learn? Probably never b/c they are too busy blaming everyone else.

And, no, I don't have sympathy for these protestors - not at all. My DH works on wall street and he would never have 5 min of the unlimited supply of time these people have to spend doing something that contributes absolutely nothing to society - b/c he is too busy working 24/7 Chat Icon

ITA!! Who do we think provides jobs in this country...umm corporations/small business owners. Should everyone work for the government? It is absurd, of course I company wants to keep its profits, that is why people take risks and open their own companies, not because they want the government to take 1/2 of it away in taxes.

ETA - I know several people who are on unemployment who are milking it for all it is worth, they aren't even attempting to look for a job until unemployment comes close to an end. There was a study done in Europe (I believe) a few years ago that basically said the longer you extend unemployment benefits the longer people will wait to find a job. I know that not everyone who is unemployed are like that but there is a large majority who have that mentality.

To everyone who blames the unemployed, and the poor, and those having a hard time.

I used to be like you, I used to POST on HERE like you. . . my world was rocked, so DRASTICALLY changed that I am ashamed of how I used to think.

I hope and pray that you never get that wake up call. I was much happier and had less stress when I was oblivious -- when it was about "them" doing the wrong thing. They did something wrong. . . "they" must have -- why else are they unemployed? homeless? in debt?

I wish I could go back to thinking like that, because that meant it could never happen to me. . . until it did.

You are right. Corporations are not in it to make sure the top execs make money. Wall Street doesn't have any corrupt, greedy, money hungry mongers who broke the system with their own greed and then turned around and asked the government to bail them out. They didn't give tens of millions of dollars to their top dogs the YEAR before asking a goverment with trillions of dollars in debt to give them MORE money.

People like the former CEO of Lehman brothers were completely innocent victims of the scandalous ignorance of the masses.

And a large majority of the folks who are collecting the pittance that is unemployment aren't trying to get jobs because it's FREE money! Why try to get a job when you can collect less than a quarter of what you were being paid to actually work? Who cares if it doesn't cover your mortgage, rent or little things like groceries for your family.. you get to relax and do NOTHING all day! It's so much fun!

*sigh*

I'm going back to bed now because I don't need a job...
