My little Italian girl can't eat tomato sauce!

DD has a BIG bowl of pasta with fresh sauce on Sunday, not her first time but her first time having it as a complete meal.

Yesterday, she had HORRIFIC diaper rash, front and back - Every time I tried to lay her down she would scream and claw to get away from me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am slathering her with Aveeno diaper cream - my mom said its a little better today but I am so upset that she can't eat sauce - she LOVED it!!!

I wouldn't rule it out. I don't think she is allergic to it but that it was to acidic for her. I would wait till it clears up and then keep putting diaper cream on her, something thick like Desitin the day you give her sauce and the day or two after and see what happens.
My DS would get the same sort of rash from anything that was acidic and the ped told me to do it and it worked.

Chat Icon Hopefully she outgrows it. Has she had other tomato based products like ketchup? Probably just too acidic for her right now if she is tolerating smaller amounts or other products.

My littlest is allergic to wheat and garlic. What kind of baby with any Italian roots is allergic to GARLIC!?!?!?

Hopefully in the future she'll be able to enjoy and indulge. My DD is currently breaking nonna's heart because she won't eat figs Chat Icon Chat Icon. We have figs coming out the wazoo but she wants no part of it. She will eat tomatoes and sauce though so nonna is happy about that.

Same thing happened to my DD, even her face got red where the sauce was. It was better within a day or so. DH was so upset.

Awww, it's probably the acid in the tomatoes that's doing it Chat Icon I lather DS up really well with Vaseline at every diaper change and that helps.

I second the vaseline. It will protect her bottom but won't irritate it any further.

LOL she will eat figs BUT the entire time she has this look on her face like she is going to puke BUT she keeps opening her mouth for more.

Oh and I have to feed it to her because heaven forbid her hands get sticky LOL

Re: My little Italian girl can't eat tomato sauce!

Try a tiny bit of sugar in just her sauce Tilde it helps absorb some of the acid, which will create acidic poops and diaper rash.

Hmmmm. . .

see this is interesting - she has only had my mom's sauce before - which she was fine with. Also has had tomato pastina from Earth's Best, with no reaction.

This was my IL's sauce - they don't use sugar, I think they may use carrots instead. . . . I blame my ILs!!! lol jk

hahahaha next time you go there if they give her sauce try a little sugar...My MIL use to make sauce with nothing to deter the acid and we ALL use to suffer greatly with indigestion, and heartburn, where as DH's aunt use a teeny bit of sugar and there is none of that.

Re: My little Italian girl can't eat tomato sauce!

it's likely just the acid. she may build up a tolerance! You may (gasp) have to alter how her sauce is made, too. Some tomatoes are more acidic than others! This is helpful: http://www.livestrong.com/article/513222-how-to-avoid-acid-in-tomato-sauce/

Re: My little Italian girl can't eat tomato sauce!

DD had this issue for a while when she ate sauce. She seems to be outgrowing it.

I use carrots in my sauce- they help with the acidity too- just like sugar. My mom doesn't use sugar or carrots and DD used to have reactions to that..but lately she seems to be tolerating it better..AM will prob grow out of it too!
