Resume Question - is 2 pages the norm now?

We recently posted a job opening where I work and couldn't help but notice that most of the resumes coming in are two full pages long and very very detailed.

I guess I am old school in that I was taught that your resume should be kept to a single page? I haven't been out of school thaaaat long - earned my master's in 2004. Have things changed that much?

Yes, they have.. being that the unemployment rates are so high and the number of resumes pouring in are so great, recruiters encourage you to "shine" on your resume and not leave anything out, making resumes longer.. Chat Icon

Re: Resume Question - is 2 pages the norm now?

I think it also depends on the level of the position. A recent college grad shouldn't try for 2 pages when they don't have much experience, but mine is 3 pages now w/ 10 years of work experience, a doctorate, and a page dedicated to publications and conference presentation.

My resume has been 2 pages long for ages. I've pretty much only seen 2 page resumes but it may be because we're looking for experienced people.

For an entry level position, I could see a one page resume.

I agree.

Mine is 2 pages - I have two degrees to list, events I've spoken at, articles published and then the experience I have from moving up to where I am now

I would be more surprised if Dir/VPs didn't send over 2 page resumes.

Also super old school because I was taught the one page rule as well.

However, I've been out of the job market for several years.

Re: Resume Question - is 2 pages the norm now?

I was told to always keep it 1 length. Anything longer than that and you risk loosing the attention of an employer who doesn't have the time to sit there and read everything...(time is money).

I managed to condense 3 pages of my work experience into 1 page. I used a 10 point font for my job descriptions and did not use bullet point formatting. I managed to squeeze my college GPA for my major and minor/honors/activities into 1 line, right below the college's name.

I also condensed prior experience by grouping them into categories and only listing Company Names, my job title and location. (ie "Marketing Experience" - 1) Company A, Title, Location2) Company B. Job Title, etc followed by -- from January 1997- December 2002, etc).

The key is to focus on your most recent work experience that is relevant to that employer. They aren't going to care that much if you are a long time sustaining member of the ASCPA (unless you're going for a veteranian job or something)...Focus on key skills, relevant experience and boiling everything to 1 page shouldn't be hard.

I also never bothered with a "References Available Upon Request" line. If they want one, thats what my contact info at the top of my resume is for.

Re: Resume Question - is 2 pages the norm now?

I still believe in the 1 page rule but for the most part I am reviewing candidates that are out of school less than 10 years. If theirs are longer than 1 page, I toss it. Its a waste of my time.

IMO, the only candidates that need resumes longer than a page have listed publications, etc.

Mine was 2 pages right out of grad school but that was specific to my type of field cause we had to include internship experience as well as work exprience. I could see why that would be the norm now. Its competative out there.

I'm on UE and they made me go in for a meeting. They told us all to make it ONLY 1 page. Never over 1 page. Even for experienced people. That was their rule with it.

They are completely wrong. A one page resume would be hard pressed to explain someone's experience (unless they have none, in which case I'm not interested).

This is an old rule. If they laid off people in the Unemployment Office, those people would know better.

If you're in your early 20s, with NO work experience, no internship, etc., then yes one page is sufficient for an entry level job.

ITA. Most headhunters I worked with on the last go-around suggested I move off of the 1-page format. I was stuck on 10 point font, wide margins, etc. Now that I am at 2 pages I can fit so much relevant info on there in a font one can actually read easily. I have been out of school for 8 years -- one of my jobs takes up 75% of the first page, because it was so detailed and so many things I did need to be written down in a certain way.

Just to make sure it wasn't the field (IT) that I hire in, I asked a few friends.

One is a marketing director at a research company. Another is a communications director in the entertainment field.

Both said unless the job is entry level, 2 page resumes are the norm. Even then, they want to see 1 page full of experience.

For an entry level marketing job (which my friend just hired someone for), they only required 1 year of experience in marketing but she was looking for internships & someone who worked during college, which would fill out that one page. Anyone without an internship or working through college was tossed in the garbage. In her words, "no way was I going to waste my time hiring someone who is in their 20s & never held a job."

I think 1 page is the rule and I stick to it. I do not think you need to list every detail from 3 jobs ago.

I agree...that is crazy. When I was actively looking for a job, I originally stuck to that 1 page rule...minimal response. I freshened it up and made it 2 pages. The response was immediate and obvious. I was also told by a recruiter that having a 1 page resume after a few years was a detriment.

Good luck!

It is ok to have it over one page when you have a lot of experience. If it is something where its one full page and then the second page is only a few lines at thetop then I would try to make it all on one page.
