Went to Albany today with 300 other teachers...

My district had a staff development day today and since over 400 teachers are getting laid off, we planned a trip to Albany to personally hand deliver letters written by the staff. It was a liberating and unifying experience but then......

I look at a public board for our district and people are slamming us for going! Do they not realize these cuts are going to hurt their kids as well?? I'm so upset people who are not teachers assume we are always doing things wrong.....People were even b*tching that their tax money paid for our trip..
ummm No Our Union Fees did

Ok vent over

It's disheartening I know. Try not to let it get to you. I know it's hard. We are always the scapegoats and the ones blames, sadly it's become part of the job! I appauld you for going!!!

One argument was that since union dues are taken out of our salaries, it is not our money - but tax payer money Chat Icon

Where is the line drawn on that comment? It's not a birthday present, it's a salary!

Seriously- I pay taxes too- and yet I am not about to dictate to the teachers in my town what they can and can't spend their money on. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyway, I applaud you. Chat Icon

That is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard! So if I buy myself lunch, I'm not really buying it... the taxpayers are? What ignorant people.

Crashing here. I do not know where you teach but there are LOTS of parents(like me) that applaud and support teachers. At our recent budget meetings(about 6-7 of them) the parents voted for a budget to be put up that would increase our taxes a fair amount but would save ALL our teachers. (There were 3 proposed budgets) It was almost 100% in favor of paying more and losing NO teachers. We fought so hard for it, that the board just announced that the proposed budget(that would lose a whole bunch of teachers) was taken off the tableChat Icon I wish you felt the same support.
