Re: 40 and up having kids

the ONLY reason I say yes is because my grandma had my aunt at 42. her and my mom are 17 years apart. people think my mom is her mom. and my aunt is only 8 years older than me.

My aunt is now 39 and my grandma is 81. My grandparents moved to florida to retire when my aunt was 21 and left her on her own. she had to eventually move in with us. I see how my aunt feels more like their caretaker than daughter. she doesnt have kids yet and is not married, so who knows if my grandparents will be around to see that. Chat Icon

BUT...other people may have a different experience with this. but its because of this that i do not want my second too far away.

Honestly i couldn't imagine having a child under 25. What about college? Career? Just regular fun b/s I did from 25 and under - i wouldn't of had that. I mean I realize some work around having a kid under 25 and yet accomplish a lot in life but for me I wouldn't of.

Of course, there are issues with having children at 40+. Facts are facts. The risk for birth defect, children with special needs, etc.. if much higher. At 40 yo you WILL be considered a high risk pregnancy.

But I don't think many women really try posponning until they are 40 to start having children.

so true, and yes, it's true that statistics are not on your side, but you never know. i had issues at 28-29, my SIL had no issues at 39. i agree that i wouldn't count on it if i could help it, but you just never know.

to answer the op, no, it's not too old. dh wants 4 kids and i don't want them too close so if we get there, i'll probably be in my low 40s for the last one, which i'm fine with. dh's mom had his sister in her 40s and she's still a very active grandma in her 60s - she's actually in the best shape of her life right now. age is mostly just a number.

Definitly not, as long as there are no medical issues. But medical issues can happen at any age so i would say the same thing no matter what the age. But if you know the benefits and risks, why not.
