what are your feelings about formula?

Just curious to see what type of formula people are leaning towards using.

Any particular brands that you are favoring more than others?

Personally, I think I am leaning towards a Similac powder, but I'm curious as to other options and any feedback!

TIA!

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

I continued with what the hospital gave me which was Similac Advanced Ready to Feed liquid.

It is more expensive but she seems to like it so I am sticking with it. Maybe when she is older I will go to powder but i heard it is very watery and doesn't fill them as much.

I used up what the hospital sent us home with ( the mini RTF bottles) and then switched over to powder with both my DC's and will for the next as well...

Powder is less expensive, easier to transport ( I travel with room temp water bottles and just bring the powder in one of those little plastic containers with the seperators)...Also, at night I bring water bottles upstairs with me and just add powder...
Never have to worry about keeping an ice-pack or warming up a cold bottle on the go Chat Icon

I have given liquid in addition to the powder if it was given to me, or if I had a copuon etc.. and my DC's nver had an issue with switching back and forth...

ETA- I used Similac because the thats what the hopsital gave and both Costco and BJ's sell it Chat Icon

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

When it was time to switch to formula we used powder.

Here is a tip if you decide to use powder: We found that if we mixed the formula in the individual bottles right before feeding time there were a lot bubbles that would give our DS too much gas.

We started mixing the formula the night before in a big shaker jug and left it in the fridge overnight. If we mixed it up the night before, the formula settled and bubbles disappeared, which meant left gas for DS.

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

I am going to try BF and pumping but also give formula if DD will take it.

My friend said whatever brand the hospital gave her kids is the one she stuck with. So maybe if your hospital gives one brand of the other..you can stick with that just as long DC likes it.

I am also going to do powder over liquid. I think the liquid is more expensive.

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

Unfortunately its hard to know which type of formula will be best for the baby. We had to switch to 4 different brands before finding the right one that agreed with Emerson.
It was A LOT of money wasted but you can usually sell/ give away to someone on here, so thats good.

As for powder or RTF. I personally like RTF. Its easier to prepare lol you just pour and go. Powder made DD veryyyy gassy. If you shake/ stir it well enough it could sometimes clump too.

But all babies are different!

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

i have heard that it could be bubbly or clumpy...and it definitely will be a trial and error thing, i guess the best bet is not to buy in bulk before she gets here!

Same exact scenario for us.

Only one thing to add... DS was a messy eater from day 1. He always dribbled and always needed a bib, even when drinking his bottle. I found that the RTF stained much worse than the powder formula that we usually used.

I will go with powdered. I don't know why, but the per-made formula always looks thick and "heavy" to me. The powered seems thinner and more easily digested. Don't ask where I come up with these thing....I have no idea!!

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

My DS spit up the ready to feed formula, so we went with powder. Thankfully the powder is much cheaper anyway and Costco carried Enfamil.

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

do you think one of those formula mixing pitchers is worth it if you're doing the powdered? that way the bubbles would have time to settle, less clumping?

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

There are pros and cons to both of course. With my first, I only used RTF...hated the powder...with my second, I was forced to use powder because its the only way his formula came....while I didn't hate it, and did like the fact that I didnt have to heat it up, the RTF was just easier.

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

I saw a feature on News12 about a certain brand of Gerber that didn't have so much Magnesium or Manganese, I couldn't remember which one, and it's supposed to be healthier for the baby, it was the natural segment, so I'm going to look in to using that one. I really want to feed the baby organic and natural from an early age.

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

My DD and I never really got the hang of breastfeeding. She never latched and I just weened and stopped pumping at 3months. We were using the enfamil formula but we were at Costco one day and they had the costco brand and the enfamil side by side. They were so similar in ingrediants we tried it. My dd loved it more than the enfamil. Plus it is almost a $20 difference in price. @Costco the Enfamil is 32.00 and the Costco brand is 16.32.

**Edited to say that It is the powder form of formula***

I "personally" haven't had any issues with my DC's and bubbles or clumping, so maybe you can try without one and invest only if you need?

Ditto again.
You jsut shake the bottle up really well. I never even let the bubbles settle. i shake and feed immediately. No clumping issues ever. DD has no gas though or anything so I gues bubbles could be an issue if she was particularly gassy. I will never for the life of me understand people who use powder and make batches in advance in a pitcher...then you have to heat it up. Defeats the purpose of the ease of poweder. Chat Icon

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

I personally like the powder b/c I found it to be easier -
the RTF has to be kept cold once the bottle/can is opened which to me was a PITA b/c it was difficult to transport, then you had to heat the bottle (I never did w/ Sean, he always had room temp formula)

I just liked the powder better-

Re: what are your feelings about formula?

I preferred the RTF over the powder and I also felt my son had less issues digesting it! but i totally understand the conveince of the powder on the go...

Just buy a cooler bag and keep the RTF in!

I plan on BFing but with DD I used RTF for the first few months, it was just soooo much easier for me. She was even on Alimentum (sp?) which is so expensive but for my sanity I didnt care...lol
