Changing locks after new purchase

My husband and I are closing soon on a house, I definately want to change the locks on the house- I think its an absolute MUST!, he's indifferent, did you change the locks when you moved into your new house??

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We didnt, the previous owner had all of the locks in the house changed to one key! Considering there are 5 doors (all with 2 locks) this was a great thing and would be expensive for us to do.
Not that there is any way to know I am right before it is too late, but the previous owners also seem like they are good people who would not try anything. If they seemed shady maybe we would have changed the locks?

I hear ya but it's not so much the people who lived there but any other people who have a key, such as a neighbor, their children (who could be shady characters, etc). So realistically the locks should be changed.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We plan on it. We are doing some renovation in the house before we officially move in, so we will change the doors and locks before we move in. right now there is nothing in the house to be worried bout at the moment.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We did, I have no idea who the older owners gave keys to, or how many are out there floating around. I just felt better doing it.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We brought our new locks with us to closing.

Locks were changed within minutes of us entering the house.

You can't be too safe.

Even if the sellers seemed like decent people, you never know who else has a copy of their key, KWIM?

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We did within the first few days of closing. It was a foreclosure and only one key was provided for the front door so who knows where the other ones were.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

It was the first thing we did after closing. We didn't know how many REA had been through the house for viewings and who had extra keys, so to be on the safe side, we changed all the locks/dead bolts before we brought anything over to the house!

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

The locks/doorknobs on the house are fairly new so we re-keyed, which is cheaper than buying all new ones.

It was $20 each, we brought them to the locksmith (so top & bottom lock for front & back door = $80). It's more if the locksmith comes to you, so we took the 5 mins to take them off and drive to them. Chat Icon

ETA: Also, the seller had different keys for the front & back doors, so we had the locksmith make them all the same key.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We changed the locks the first day, even though the guy seemed really nice. He had teenage boys who were known in our area who caused some trouble so we weren't going to take any chances.

Yes, we did. Mostly because we did not like the door knob that the seller had.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We closed and called my dad right as we left and asked him to head there and start changing the locks. But when we bought the house it was a nasty divorce and the previous owner was at the closing and told us if we didn't mind he was going to go to the house and check his keys. He had another key that looked like it and he wasn't sure if it was his friends house key or the key to the house. DH told him not to bother becuase we are heading straight there to change the locks.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

definitely

we did it the day we closed. Our house was empty for a few weeks after the closing while we did some renovations, so we wanted peace of mind that no one else in the neighborhood (or the previous owners who moved only a few streets over) would be able to come in.

you can never be too safe when it comes to your house
