wwyd preschool issues?

i'm a teacher so i know i AM picky but i'm kinda not liking my ds' new school.

~they don't have a class list (it's usually volentary but i always gave the parents an option so that they could be in contact with each other and so they could know their childs friends names.)
~they don't have a weekly or monthly schedule sent home (i'd like to know what they do (art, gym, music etc. what day so i don't have to pull it out of my ds.)
~no class mom
~they serve breakfast but i got no menu

this is supposed to be a great school but these are basics to me that they don't do. the other moms don't seem to care.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

I'm sorry you are not happy. We've been at our preschool for 4 years now, DD started when she was 2 and now DS is in pre-k. I'll share how our school handles these issues.

At our school we have to ask in the office for the class list, the teachers don't provide it. Many parents don't realize this and just trade info when picking up or dropping off.

We don't get a schedule, but if we ask the teacher will tell us which day of the week the specials are (art appreciation, movement, music and library). Plus I think there is an overall schedule hanging up outside the office. I do get a letter every Friday with all the week's work telling me what they did, not day by day but overall. Some teachers are more specific than others, but I've never felt like I didn't know what was going on.

I've never had a class mom until my dd started Kindergarten. The teachers would ask a different parent to help on different holidays. If you wanted a specific one you can request it.

My school does provide a monthly lunch menu, they don't serve breakfast.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

I would bring it up and see what they say.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be on a class list. I'd be pi$$ed if the school put my info down without my knowledge.

As for my DS's preschool, he does get a lunch menu and he does get a schedule for what the classroom is doing that week and next week. I would definately ask for a schedule. It just seems to be a given you want to know what your kid is doing.

I would talk to them. It never hurts to at least ask about them even if they say they don't do what you are asking.

I have never heard of a school not have a class list or of any child who was not on it. Maybe they give them out later - we haven't gotten our schools directory yet - they are finalizing it and we had to check out info today with the school and we should be getting ours soon. They put them in their cubbies.

As far as lists - our school doesn't do that - but there is a list on their website that shows what things they will do/learn etc. And you can go there and look.

They don't give meals (the participating parent brings snack for the day at our school) so that has never been an issue - but I would at least think they would provide a list of what items they will serve even if it isn't a day to day meal list.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

Yes, I would ask. Why not? I asked the teacher for DS' schedule so I know when gym is and dress him accordingly that day. If they serve lunch, yes, I would also ask for the menu.

I don't see anything wrong with the topic of your questions.

Some schools may not give a class list though.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

I'm like you. Noahs only 3, I want info! lol

I right now still drop him/pick him up so I ask the teachers every day, whats today ( gym, library, music) and they have a chart on the wall and also a chart of therapies for the special needs students.

I never heard of a class list, didn't know they had such a thing. Would like to know the other kids names though.

They dont serve meals , but if they did I would insist on a menu if my child was eating anything there.

I do think you should know what they are eating. I dont think a class mom is necessary. AND I 100% agree with you that a list of children in the class is not a crime.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

Last year we didn't get the class list til much later in the school year. As for a schedule we got a monthly calendar, but it didn't say all that much. We also got a weekly newsletter. DS is at a new school this year, no class list yet, but I know the teacher is preparing one b/c she asked us to fill something out if we want to be on it. Also a weekly newsletter at this school.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

DD is in a 3 day a week 4 yr old program at her pre k.

they do not hand out class lists in her school. Honestly, I dont think id want my phone # being handed out to the whole class. Maybe thats just me.

we do get a monthly calander with the gist of the daily activity they are doing and any "specials" for the month. I dont think you wanting to know the schedule is being "that mom" at all!

she isnt given a meal there but if she were I would MOST DEFINATELY want to see a menu for sure.

I would bring up your concerns in a non judegmental way.Chat Icon

We got a monthly calendar and we get a letter home pretty much daily.

They don't serve lunch (we send in snack and lunch), but, I would ask about this and I'd ask about your child's schedule. Never hurts.

As for a class list, we didn't get one (as of yet) and it honeslty really doesn't bother me.

Re: wwyd preschool issues?

thanks for all your replies! it helps to see what other schools do.

i know a class list isn't necessary but as a teacher i'd always give a ton of options on the info the parent would or wouldn't want to share. some would just put an email and that's cool. i personally just like knowing the other kids names so i could talk to my ds about his friends. he only knows maybe 1/4 of their names at this point. in his last school we even had parents names and tons of info so it made getting together much easier.

i'm going to ask again about a menu. ds eats at home but i would like to know what they offer in case he wants it that day.

as far as the schedule thing i honestly think that that is a basic thing all pre-k's should do. i would literally tell the parents what the kids did every 1/2 hour of our school day. but i'm just looking for a basic outline of their day. how hard is it to write that up and make 14 photo copies?!?
