Breastfeeding and Birth Control
Ok, so I know it's kinda early to even be thinking about birth control... but can we be on BCP and BF at the same time? 
I should have asked this during the Baby Belly class the other night but I didn't think about it until now.

I can see why it can't be good for the baby, but have never heard either way.

I was told it is because the estrogen in regular BCP can potentially kill your milk supply.
You can also do Mirena and Paraguard IUDs and Depo Provera shots

My friend was told there is 1 pill you can use.... BUT she was was told that it SHOULDN"T affect her milk..meaning that it could dry up your milk...
It's such a tricky situation! I have no idea what I'll do when that time comes. I wouldn't want to risk not being able to breast feed...and I wouldn't want to get pg right away either!

Not a silly questions at all! There is no way I can get pregnant again right away so I will def be asking the dr this when I am further along!

I am almost positive that for most people while you are breast feeding you cant get pregnant or atleast the chances are low. Your body still has some hormones going through it thanks to the milk production....

that was what I had heard too and what I was banking on- probably not the smartest thing not to have a back-up though!

Oh yea I totally agree.... I heard you cant have sex for a while after the baby is born anyway but when we can condoms will most definitely be used!

Oooh so it's more about disrupting the milk production then the excess of hormones being passed on through the milk. Good to know!!
I also heard that your chances of getting preggo are lower when breast feeding. BUT I've watched one too many episodes of 'I didn't know I was pregnant' when women swore they couldn't conceive bc they were BF and ended up not knowing they were bc AF never came.
Condoms it is!!

I know someone who was BFing their son. When he was 9 months old she wanted to TTC #2 but hadn't gotten her period yet. She went to OB to find out why and found out she was 24 weeks pregnant with a girl!!! Can you imagine?  She said she still had flab from prev preg so didn't think anything of it. And her son wasn't STTN so she was always tried, didn't think anything of that either.
ETA - To the OP - There is a mini pill that is safe to take when BFing. But the pill is very sensitive therefore leaving it less effective. I have heard you have to take it the same time every day in order for it to work.
We just pull and pray

OH MY GOD!!!!!  I couldn't even imagine!!
I'd probably feel better using condoms or the 'pull and pray' method than taking a pill that may/may not work.

They will put you on the mini pill while BFing, but it's not as effective so you have to be sure to take it at the same time every day and never miss a pill.
On a side note.....when my first DS was 6 months old, I was EBF and still hadn't gotten AF.......I never did because I got preggo with DS #2! So i would def. take the mini pill and do it religiously unless you want 2 under 2....or even 2 under 1!

dont' think you can't get pg while breastfeeding. My doc said it was a myth. My friend got her period 6 weeks after having her son and she soley breastfeeds. Definitely don't count on breastfeeding as your means for birth control!

It's alot more common than most think!!!! LOTS of women get pregnant while BFing!!!
You can take the mini pill while BFing, but there is STILL a chance of getting pregnant while on it. It's also VERY important to take it the same time everyday.

Do NOT use BFing as the only form of birth control. Some women don't get AF while BFing, but many do, especially as DC moves to solids and nurses less often.
With the mini pill, you need to take it at the same time every day.

ITA. DH and his sister are 18 months apart, and so are his two cousins. I was forewarned by my MIL and aunt-inlaw: back-up is key unless you're ok with getting pg right away.
Not sure about Mirena when BF, but I know there's a copper IUD that won't affect your hormone levels or milk supply. I'll probably go on the mini-pill after Baby M arrives.

I am getting the Paragaurd IUD. It's the Copper one. It's good for up to 10 years. It has more side effects then Mirena but Mirena can reduce milk supply "in some women" Thats not a chance I am willing to take.
Breast feeding as birth control... ever heard of "Irish twins"... yeah those are the women who use BFing as BC.

PLEASE do not believe this... this is only for women who ONLY breastfeed - NO bottles, and NO pacifiers. And even THEN it is not foolproof.
I had two doctors and every single nurse that came on duty tell me basically "you WILL get pregnant"
I am going to look into an IUD when I go for my 6w appt

I said at the end that we would just use condoms just in case... why put more hormones that may or may not work in my body? I also said the chances were lower when you are BF.
