When you changed from formula to milk, how many ounces did DC drink per day?

We transitioned flawlessly from formula to milk! DS LOVES it. He went from drinking 28 ounces of formula a day to 40 ounces+ of milk (and would be happy to chug more). I fill a bottle with 9 ounces and he cries for more.

Is this too much? It seems like a lot, since it is more than he was drinking of formula.

That's great that he took so well to milk. I think 40 oz of milk is way too much though. I'd try to give him a maximum of 24 oz. Chat Icon It's not the main source of nutrition like formula was. I'd offer a bottle or cup of milk with each meal and then water or juice after that.

I agree. If he's hungry for it, try giving him a snack instead.

I think it's something like 14-24 oz of whole milk/day.

DD drank the same amount of milk that she did with formula. So when we transitioned she was getting 3 8oz bottles of formula and then instead she got 3 8oz bottles of milk.

We were told by the ped to give DS anywhere from 16 to 24 oz a day. He started out drinking around 16, now it's closer to 20.

ETA: The idea is that actual meals replace the nutrients that DC are getting from formula, the milk is not meant to replace the formula, it's just a good way of adding fat, calcium and vitamin D to their diet.

Thanks everyone. Chat Icon I called my ped and she agreed that it should be 16-24 ounces of milk. He just LOVES the milk though, and cries for more when he's done. Chat Icon I hate not giving it to him. He cries when I try to give water instead.

That's milk overload! That's good that he loves it though!

DD went from 18-22oz of formula per day to 16oz of milk per day, not including her cheese or yogurt. You need to factor that in there too!

I am introducing milk now and the Ped told me no more than 12 oz of milk a day. He said to give water as well as juices with their 3 meals.

I'm still doing bottles. I tried sippys, all different kinds, but he just shakes them and laughs hysterically when it all flies out. Chat Icon I can give him milk in the sippy, but to be honest the bottles are just easier for me since he doesn't do either himself.

I don't know, I think I am going to keep giving him more, even though the doctor said to cut back. He still eats A LOT, so it's not like it means he's not eating enough food. Chat Icon I just feel like maybe I know DS better than they do. He's 30 lbs now and 33.5", so he's a big boy...Maybe he needs his milk.

And we both really enjoy having our milk and cookie snacks! Chat Icon

Thats a lot of milk! Landon was big too (not quite as big as will at 1yr though) and we sometimes went up to 28 oz. But usually it was 24 oz (3 x 8 oz cups). If you really have to give him more, maybe give1% or 2% instead of whole milk.

When you transitioned, did you start the morning (as soon as Landon woke up) with food instead of a bottle/cup?

He's starving when he wakes up, and will drink 10 oz.+ of milk. To be honest, I am usually dragging and enjoy not having to get his food ready right away!

Then I give him breakfast at like 10AM after his first nap.

I think once you transition to the cup, he'll cut back.

Make him work for it!!! He's smart - he'll get it. Just take a weekend or a day when you're home with him and work at it Chat Icon

I give him an 8 oz cup as soon as he wakes up. If he finishes it before breakfast then he gets water to drink with breakfast. He usually starts eating his banana before finishing the milk and then we go straight to breakfast (which is pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs, french toast, bagel, etc). Its the same now at 2 yrs as it was a 1yr. Maybe if you try feeding him right away he won't drink as much?

ITA with Julz. This is what I have been doing with DD#1 since she turned 1 year old. She gets 4oz of milk as soon as she wakes up and breakfast immediately after. She drinks 18 oz. per day total and is 19 months old. Chat Icon

ETA: I was told by my ped not to give more than 24 oz per day b/c toddlers who drink too much milk are often at risk for iron deficiency anemia. This is usually because milk doesn't have any iron in it, and because if they fill up on milk, then they don't eat many other foods with iron either.

Re: When you changed from formula to milk, how many ounces did DC drink per day?

DS drinks about 24/day...

Sometimes we'll throw an extra 8oz bottle in there...making 32oz... but that's in desperation (like if we really really need to get him to nap, or if he's super cranky... he is a total baba kid!)

He drinks milk and water from a sippy without a problem..

He has 3 bottles (morning, noon and night)..Im not planning on taking them away anytime soon though...

I don't know too much about milk because we haven't started yet but I agree about the sippys. I feel like Liam doesn't drink much water out of them now. I have tried a bunch.

I ordered the Tupperware ones because Nicole (Shorty) suggested those and am waiting for them to come. Hopefully those will work better.

Beth, I'd ask your pediatrician why he shouldn't have more than 24 oz of milk. I think most doctors set limits b/c too much milk can lead to potential health issues. If it's simply b/c the doctor wants to make sure he's eating enough table foods and a variety of food, then you don't have to worry. I'd just check the reasoning behind the recommendation. Chat Icon

He might cut down on the milk if he gets it in a sippy cup. DS didn't drink as much milk once he successfully transitioned to the cup.
