We got a census in the mail about a month ago and it asked A LOT of personal questions. Income, highest level of school completed, social security #, etc. I refused to fill it out...

I don't understand why people take issue with answering those questions when it's coming from the govt? I know I research neighborhoods for relocating and those stats are important to me when looking for comparative areas.

I agree....Imean like another said, they ALREADY have teh info , they just want it along with all the others in one solid sweep at their fingertips.

They are the ones issuing YOU your birth certificate, and SS# ...so whats their to hide ?

It's not about hiding it from them. It's about writing it all down on paper and it falling into the wrong hands, getting lost in the mail etc. They even rec dropping it DIRECTLY into the mail box at the PO vs dropping it in a regular mailbox on the street. Same thing I do with my taxes, I mail them cert/reg mail directly at the post office.

But in this case, it's different. If I don't need to list my personal info, I won't be listing it whereas my taxes I have no other choice.

It's very simple. When someone uses your information and commits fraud in your name, you ALWAYS think twice and question anytime you have to use that info for fear of the same thing happening again.

While I understand name and DOB are not entirely private, I still refrain from giving out my info whenever I don't absolutely have to. Bottom line.

Having a father that did fraud investigations both federally and for Nass. Cty, I'm realistic about things. Giving my income and other information to the federal government will not put me at any more of a fraud risk than making a purchase with my debit or credit card.

I have a father who was in law enforcement and he would be the first one to tell me not to use my info ANYWHERE I don't need to. Chat Icon But I don't even need him to tell me that. I just know what I have been through as a victim of ID theft and I will never give out any info that I do not have to. That's just the bottom line to me. One less peice of paper floating around with personal info of mine is one less chance of my personal info being invaded. Just one less chance, and I will take that.

It is 100% AGAINST THE LAW for the government to use anything in a census against you.

The most important thing is someone who lives here illegally. They can still be counted, and NOTHING on a census can be used for any legal or prosecution.

So it may feel weird, but its fine.

I know I am not concerned with the above. I just don't want to list any details that i consider private, if I don't legally have to. I will list basics, no prob there, but names, DOB, etc, no thanks.

My FIL does not have a birth certificate because he was born at home and the doctor never filed one. Chat Icon
I was able to get the 1940 census record to use as proof of his age, as part of getting him identification and a new SS card.

eta : I still don't feel comfortable giving out too much information, so I will list the number of people living at my address and also the year of our births. No need for the month and day.
I'm just paranoid about identity thieves stealing the completed census forms.

The reality is things like this do indeed happen. Will you also list the names or just # of people and year of birth?

no names, just the # of people and year of birth.

My FIL's census record states male child aged 6 years, not his name.
It does list his parents' names and address.

I have to say, I can see why someone wouldn't want to put that information in the mail. It's totally not about the government knowing but about the scumbags who know to look for this stuff in the mail this time of year. That being said, there's not much they'll do with your birthdate and name. This particularly doesn't worry me, btu I can see how it would worry some people.

It's not even just about me. It's putting MY info, DHs info, DDs info, all on one page, in writing.

just remember if you don't send it back with how many people - your neighborhood may be under represented in all aspects of gov't (town, county, state, federal)

Re: Census - what if we really don't feel comfortable putting down our info?

I just went through 4 days of Enumerator training. You can refuse any information you wish if you do not feel comfortable. The minimum we ask for is a head count of those living in the homes. I am sworn to keep all information I receive confidential. There are no personal questions about SSN's or mothers maiden names etc. For every person missed in the census your area will lose out on federal aid. It's also helpful when determining how federal money should be spent based upon demographics.

Jon Stewert had the Secretary of Commerce on this week

starts at 15 minutes, but the beginning is hilarious if you have time

Interesting things about how much money is saved if you mail it in and how much will be saved with that first letter that everyone thought was a waste of money...

agreed. it is important. I hope everyone in my town fills it out properly so we get the funds we need as a community.

Oh yeah... my parents are putting down "American" as their race since they don't think people should be split along race lines or be given special treatment. Chat Icon
