anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

my hair is thin and straight long and scraggly. It just has no life. My friend's mom who is a stylist mentioned a spiral perm - but I am afraid that its going to look goofy. Anyone ever have a perm done? How is a spiral perm diff then a regular one? (my mom used to give me home perms when I was little and I would always hate how they looked like cocker spaniel ears)Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

haven't had on done since the 80s and actually the salon I go to cringe every time someone comes into get a perm....

see if there are other options out there....I wouldn't recommend a perm.

I was thinking the same thing. I had one in the 80's. Not sure if many salons do that anymore.

What about extensions?

My last perm was in 1991.

BUT one of my old bosses has hair like yours and she still gets perms. If she didn't tell me, I would have never know. It's a not a spiral perm, more of a body wave that does just that - gives her body and a slight wave and she can blow it straight. Her hair always looks good.

A friend of mine gets perms - she has thin hair as well.

I swear I never knew she was getting perms all these years. I thought her hair was naturally curly - it DEF does not look like the perms of the 80's Chat Icon

Re: anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

i did an at home perm about 2 years ago. i have very fine, thin, long hair- so i was content with just a wave. it didnt last & it made my hair very brittle & dry for a few weeks. i cant say that i wont try it again, i probably will. i hate how flat my hair is.

Re: anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

Here is the thing.
A body wave can be a GREAT thing on super fine flat hair.
BUT
You have to go to someone you totally trust, make sure they use very good product (perm lotion) and for the love of GOD- make sure the rods aren't too small.

I used to get body waves all the time- not 1980s perms- just a big rod and a gentle solution- to give me some soft waves and some body and oompf to my hair.

It never looked like I had a perm - nobody who didn't know me woudl know.

Having said that- you really have to trust the person doing it and they have to have experience with body waves, etc/

I have had some disasters back in the 80s that I do not care to ever repeat! Chat Icon

Re: anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

In 1990. I wanted to look like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. It started out awful, but actually turned out to be pretty nice. I've been wearing it straight since it grew out though. If your hair is very fine, you may consider either cutting it (I know, it sucks to think about) or even hair extensions/weaves for fullness. You can also try blowing it upside down, thickening cremes/sprays, braiding it at night, or a body wave rather than a perm. I recently read an article about body waves, I can't remember which beauty mag it was in. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Re: anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

I had perms in the 80s and early 90s and then I had one again in 2003 or 2004. The best one I ever had was a spiral perm. It all depends on how your hair takes the curl. I would still be getting them if I did not color my hair. I love the look but both of those processes can dry the hair and I don't like that they take the shine out. The most important part is to be able to wait until it grows out before you perm again. Perming the same hair over and over again can really damage it.

Re: anyone ever gotten a perm in their hair?

I had a perm in the 80's and mid 90's on long hair.

My hair is thin.

I am NOT a candidate for a perm. It damaged my hair at the time.

Thin hair is too fragile for a perm.

Not necessarily. I have the thinnest finest most FRAGILE hair ever and have gotten tons of perms/body waves with no damage. And this was while I was highlighting too!
The difference in today's perms/body waves is that the lotions are MUCH gentler.
I used to get a PH balanced one SPECIFICALLY for color treated/damaged/fragile hair.

It really all comes down to going to someone you trust who knows what they are doing and who uses the right product.
