Block Party Etiquette

So there is a block party going on somewhere nearby to my house. They have a DJ who is playing extremely loud music. I put my kids to bed and shut their windows and you can still hear every songs rather loudly. I can only imagine the people one block over to them and how PO'd they might be. So what is a reasonable time to stop the DJ?

I would think 10ish would be a reasonable time to stop. But I was at a party that had a band a couple of years ago and they were allowed to play until 11 per the town noise ordinance.

My friends are planning a block party and they were told that the DJ has to shut down at 9PM. ( I am in Queens )

Personally, I think that 10PM would be better but that is just me.

To me, 9 should be the considerable limit.

Re: Block Party Etiquette

Also, you know how I feel about thisChat Icon I called the police just before and they came over and took care of it right away. It's just rude and inconsiderate. People have kids, people need to sleep. I waited until after 11 to call, just to give the benefit of the doubt. Granted, they're still outside acting like a bunch of rowdy, drunk fools, but at least it's not my windows shaking from the bass anymoreChat Icon

Re: Block Party Etiquette

I would think 9:00, the absolute LATEST being 10. Where I used to live, I believe people were not permitted to have such activities going on much later 9pm Chat Icon Maybe it's not like that everywhere though. But even without such rules, I would hope people should still have common courtesy. It's not like you're excluded. If you're near houses where people SLEEP, you should have respect. Chat Icon

They didn't stop until 12:48 last night. It was so frigging loud too. Jaidy woke up twice. I wish I knew exactly what block it was so I could walk up and down it with an air horn this morningChat Icon

Re: Block Party Etiquette

Our block had a block party and the DJ was done and packed by 11PM. We were told by the town that he was only allowed to go up until that time. The noise ordinance for where I live in the town of hempstead is 7am to 11PM. Any noise before 7AM and after 11PM can be reported to the police and they can be in trouble. I am so sorry they were a nuisance but 12:45AM is just plain wrong I would have called the cops at 11:01PM.

Re: Block Party Etiquette

I am in the minority with my answer. If the loud noise is because of a block party which happens once a year, let them enjoy it. It is the weekend.

If the music was as loud as you say, I would imagine that you have been able to locate the block. If you were not sure which block the music was coming from, it could not have been that loud. In any case, I think letting it slide is for the better.

Who knows in the future you may be in their shoes?

It was that loud and I couldn't locate the exact block because I couldn't leave my sleeping children to go and look. Sound travels in weird ways. I could tell what direction it was coming from but I didn't know 100% which block it was on.
So you think loud music playing till almost 1am is just fine in a family neighborhood? I know I would never want to have a block party with the DJ staying till 1am.

I agree. It depends on your town rules as well.

i completely agree. you can have fun still without blasting music. not everyone is off on the weekends--those people have a right to sleep at 10pm.

just because i'm having fun at a block party doesn't mean my neighbor 5 blocks away should have to be kept awake until 1am. that is ludicrous.
