? about putting a flat screen tv over the fireplace

Hi,

We hope to close on a house soon (fingers crossed) and are thinking about putting our 52" flat screen above the fireplace (although I'm iffy on it).

Has anyone done this? What are some of the things we should consider? Also, does anyone have recommendations on an installer, I don't think we can do this ourselves.

TIA!

We have a gas fireplace and put it over ours. Don't know what the 'protocol' is for wood-burning ones.

We installed ourselves - we already had the cable wires in place on the wall above our FP though. DH did the mount himself, and then we both lifted the TV up. All in all - the whole install took about 3 hours. Finding studs, making sure everything was level, etc...

I imagine if you didn't want to drill holes you could snake the wires along the baseboard, up the side of the FP and into the TV.

We did this. The appliance store installed it for us. They mentioned that moving a flatscreen over a heat source voids that warantee, so they gave us a tv stand just in case we have a problem and need the company to come in. Just make sure there's a good amount of space btw the wall and the actual chimney. We've had NO problems at all, and love how it frees up floor space.

Enjoy!

The heat and soot isn't good for the TV.

Also its against code to snake the power line to tv behind sheetrock, just a fyi before you invest a lot of time in this project.

we have a non working fireplace and we mounted ours above it.

We couldn't drop the wires in the back so right now they are loose down to the electric outlet. We will eventually figure out how to make it neater looking.

We have our above the fireplace, but it is on the stand, not mounted to the wall. We used our fireplace during the winter, and didn't have any problems.

We have a 42" flat screen above our fireplace insert. Before we put it up DH wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to be too hot above the fireplace so we took a heat gun and pointed it above the fireplace and the temp was only about 90-95 degrees. Anything over 100 we wouldn't have put it up. It's been up for about 6 months now and I have no complaints thus far.

We have a 42" flat screen over our gas fireplace. I am not sure about putting it over a wood burning one. We had it installed by the appliance company we bought the TV from. They were able to use an outlet we had right to the side of the fireplace ( if you don't have an outlet close enough they have to make one by running the electric. They ran the wires through the wall. It was $$ ($400) to have them do it but with electric and cutting holes, I wanted a professional. HTH

We have a 40 inch over our fireplace and have had it there for almost 2 1/2 years with no problems and we have a wood burning fireplace. There are pictures in my album under downstairs. We did the installation ourselves when we redid the room.
