SUSHI

Ok so the only thing ive been craving is sushi. It's my FAVORITE thing to eat and its been killing me not to have it! Here's my question: is it a REAL no no? I mean, I hear don't have deli meat or hot dogs, or feta or ANY alcohol. Obviously this rule is meant to be broken at some point. Does anyone have sushi? Am I crazy or is it OK once in a blue moon? I wouldnt buy it from a place I dont fully trust, and when sushi is bad you know it! Obviously if it's that bad then I wont put the baby at risk, that would be silly.

Re: SUSHI

As far as I know it's one of the major no-nos...bc it's raw, can't heat it up or anything..

Re: SUSHI

I would just stick with cooked sushi like shrimp rolls, tempura rolls, veggie rolls, Cali rolls, etc... It may not be quite as good as a spicy tuna, but it will meet your craving.

I've had it twice so far this PG...and I've had spicy tuna rolls. I will only go to one place though, I know the owners and trust them implicitly......

Re: SUSHI

Any sushi with raw fish in it is a Big No No. You can still have tempora, California Roll, avocado roll, etc. Pretty much any sushi without the raw fish. I miss real sushi too... CA Roll is not the same and Oh Boy do I miss my Spicey Tuna and Spicey Salmon Roll. Yum! Don't even get me started on my Fav... Rainbow Roll. A couple of more months left!
DH and I still go with friends once in a while so I can have my miso soup, edamame and of course... the sushi that's allowed. Just not the same.

I actually eat deli meat, hot dogs ( kosher only, but those are the ones I like) and feta . The deli meat, I stick with turkey and heat up for a few seconds, and almost ALL feta is pasturized (sp) , so it IS ok to eat .

No alcohol OR sushi except for california roll and any cooked roll.
Some women do, but no raw fish while pregnant for me , due to potential microscopic parasites and bacteria.

I'm having sushi for lunch today for the 4th time this week. Seems to be the only thing I like these days that doesn't give me heartburn and that I like.
However I've only been getting cooked rolls and the salad with ginger sauce.
I miss the tuna though.

Re: SUSHI

I love sushi, but I'm avoiding any raw fish.

I've had plenty of cooked rolls, like eel, california, dragon rolls. It's really helped my cravings, and I don't feel like I'm missing it all that much. I have it about once a week.

If you go to a good restaurant and look at their menu, some even list their cooked/non-raw rolls.

Of course, there's always the debate that they prepare your cooked roll on the same counter they prepare the raw rolls and the bacteria is still there.

My opinion....follow the advice of your OB and go with your gut. Chat Icon

Actually, freezing the fish before it's served kills any potential parasites and bacteria. So you can have sushi that has been frozen first - as most is.

The only problem is finding a place that will actually admit that it freezes it first! I have a friend who called around tons of places and couldn't get a definitive answer from most. Chat Icon

Four years ago, I went to a health spa ( it was raw vegan, fun times) where they take a blood sample and show you under a microscope parasites that they claim are from sushi from my blood. Needless to say I did not eat sushi for quite some time after that.

Then again, that place didn't want you to eat anything unless it was organic, raw , and veggies , nuts and fruit and that's IT.

Re: SUSHI

My Ob allows me to have it actually. I know there are any other doctors who will say absolutely not though. My Ob maintains that chicken is a bigger threat to people than raw fish.

Re: SUSHI

My doctor told me it is NOT a real "no" although a lot of girls on here seem to disagree. He said first of all, if you got a parasite it would not travel through the placenta or hurt the baby in any way (you'd be sick for a little while, but it wouldn't hurt the baby). Second, he said, and I quote "I've been eating raw sushi for 25 years and I have yet to get a parasite." So, if you eat it at a reputable place, I wouldn't be overly concerned. He also said the mercury studies on fish in general are being revamped and the benefits of fish to you and the baby vastly outweigh the risks as long as you don't eat the highest mercury containing fish (but who ever heard of tile fish sushi anyway!)

ok... i'm sorry, but that it TOTALLY ridiculous and untrue. i can't believe that there are places out there that propagate these lies.

you were probably looking at the bacteria that live on your skin, which (harmlessly) contaminate many blood samples Chat Icon

about sushi, i agree with the AP who pointed out that women in japan continue to eat sushi, and we're not seeing them keeling over sick at alarming rates.

so i eat sushi whenever i feel like it.

Re: SUSHI

ok good, im starting to feel better about knowing im going to fall off the no-sushi wagan anyday now. i mean, come on -- women do drugs and chain smoke and SOME babies turn out FINE (not all Chat Icon ) so would some tuna sashimi REALLLLY be that bad?! i doubt it. however, if this child is born with gills and a fin i'll feel really guilty.

Re: SUSHI

I think you should just go for it. Anything in moderation is my motto except for alcohol, smoking, etc. Most of the things we eat, our parents all ate and they didn't have any problems. In regards to the cheese thing, all these soft cheeses when looking at the labels are pasturized. I agree with many of the others and would try tostemed stuff first. I'm loving the spicy california rolls and shrimp tempura rolls right now. Even though shrimp must be in moderation too. Happy eating!
